Hi, I have a 2 year old (just turned 2) and I'm going to start him on his "experience walks" and wanted him to start wearing his bit.
No pressure will be on the bit, just want him to start getting used to it.
He's had a straightbar happymouth for his first ever bit and typical youngster he's chewed it until it's to rough to use!! He's since had a thin loose ring jointed snaffle which is now too small for him. I went for a thin bit as his mouth is quite small and as there is no pressure on it I thought it was better forbid mouth.
So im going to the saddlery this weekend to buy him a fleece and will be tempted by the shiny bits!!
I don't want another loose ring as it rubbed his soft lips once and not going to let that happen again...I was thinking of going for a eggbutt jointed snaffle but I don't know if I should go for a happymouth or metal?
Dentist came for a check up last month and said his teeth were coming though nicely and there were no issues.
Anyone with youngster and bits experience out there?

I used a nylon snaffle until she was ready for a metal bit when I moved her on to a eggbutt snaffle but finished up with a full cheek french link to stop her pulling the bit through her mouth! French link was also not as thick & she was far happier with it.

I have a happy mouth, double jointed snaffle in my 3 year old, and he seems to like it. My dentist advised not to put anything with a single joint in, as he is cobby, and has a chunky tongue!

Def nothing single jointed. Happy mouth can be really good, but they are thick so won't suit all mouth shapes. If he shows no hints that he isn't happy with metal yet, then I would just go for that. My choice would be a french lozenge eggbutt (the flat link of a french link can give quite a positive tongue pressure, the lozenge will reduce this and so make it less of a challenging bit to accept and will suit a larger tongue too.). This one looks good http://www.derbyhouse.co.uk/Equestr...rsteel+Oval+Link+Eggbutt+Snaffle_314-0568.htm

I wouldn't go for a myler as such an early bit - they are rather like marmite and can be a bit of a challenging bit for a baby. NS would be better if you fancy a smart brand.

Going though the same thing so i was interested to see your post.
I'm going to try a NS as my last youngster took to it straight away.
I measured my youngsters mouth and i think he'll be ok in a 5 and a half which i thought was quite big for a 2 year old?
