I have a horse who has just started competing at medium but he calls non stop. Last week I took him xc schooling and he called for over an hour, even on the approach to fences! He calls non stop in the warm up and in the test. He Aldo does it schooling and hacking at home.
Yesterday I hired an arena and he shreiked for fourty minutes!
Any suggestions?

Is he concentrating on you and performing his best still when he shouts? Sounds a bit like he needs something more to concentrate on so he forgets about being vocal. May be wrong though :-)

I feel your pain, mine does this throughout dressage tests, and in the warm up for SJ. For some reason though he knuckles down and concentrates when we go in the ring fo SJ - probably in anticipation of all the dodgy strides I ask for

I have tried to stop mine by each time he does it, asking for something more, so asking for lateral work etc to try and refocus his concentration. A wee kick in the ribs and a jaggle of the bit can work sometimes for me too. I've had mine 8 years though, and haven't cracked the habit yet :)

a hob day or tie back?????????????? only joking! i would work him harder!! get him concentrating on you and a NO and a light tap on his shoulder with your whip when he starts to get verbal. is he attached to a special friend??? even so i would repremand him when he is verbal and make him concentrate. can be easier to say than do though!!! is he a stressy type? perhaps a calmer might help?

If he despite the calling out is still on the aids and doing what you are asking of him, I wouldn't worry about it, annoying as perhaps it is.

My boy does this and tbh I've given up trying to stop him, it's just his thing, must say tho it's getting less and less.
