Andalucia The avid equestrian continues her tour of the world's horse-powered communities by heading for Jerez in Andalucia. Here, she explores a culture often overshadowed by the Spanish tourism industry. She meets a family of mounted bullfighters, investigates pioneering horsebreeding techniques, and takes a dressage lesson that exceeds her expectations

I'm certainly no bunny hugger - but was appalled at the way that mare was killed.

I wouldn't bet on it. Does say meets a family of Bull Fight riders. Bound to be some blood there

It is a strange title for a show though, to me its more of a natural world / cultural type documentary rather than ' Horse People' which to me infers a profile of an individual each week. Either way I won't be watching it.

it seems then that this programme has gone for extremes doesnt it. is the last one going to be the other extreme, these californian sorts who have their ponies in the house and even marry them. I just dont think it is dong the horse world any favours tbh.

You are right it won't do the horse world any favours. Everything the non horsey person sees on telly in one way or another will lead them to believe horses are badly treated from hunting with horses / dogs through to Laura Renwick beating her horse at Olympia and now this horror.

FFS!! This documentary series is showing a different side to the horse world!! Comparing it to Laura Renwick is ridiculous!! Very few non horse people will have seen that anyway!!!

FFS yourself , its a generic comment designed to make the point that no matter what way horses are portrayed on television lately its not positive in terms of their welfare, care etc. From a non horsey point of view it looks like all horses are either eaten or beaten and it would be nice to have a show that was more positive.

Bumpy that slaughter was on for what, maybe 3 minutes perhaps 4? The rest of the programe portrayed the care these horses got in a very positive light. So out of an hours worth of documentary you feel these three minutes are the be all and end all do you?

I don't think just because you didn't enjoy seeing a horse killed makes you a bunny hugger. I am getting quite tired of this phrase constantly been used on here to be honest. Please can you give me a definition of what a 'bunny hugger' is so I can be more understanding?

Because I don't want to see a bull tortured and terrified (cos I bet they will show this next week) infront of a huge audience to the point of exhaustion only to then being finished off by someone on a horse with a lance who is cheered for his skill/showmanship etc, does that mean I have to be deemed as a 'bunny hugger'??

Yes because thats what everyone will remember, point illustrated by the number of threads on the subject on this site alone.

I'm assuming thats a QR and not aimed at me

FWIW, I agree. I did not enjoy seeing th horse being killed but feel it was important to show it in context with the rest of the documentary.
ETA: "These people breed their horses for meat....here is where they keep the foal meat....these are the foals that have been bred for meat" was said right at the start so TBH I think I would have been disappointed if they didnt show the slaughter after all we had seen every other aspect of their lives

The 3rd show is in Montana and involves Barrel Racing, I can see next weeks, as it inolves bull fighting causing some viewers distress.

QR-
I am looking forward to next weeks.I dont understand bull fighting so will grab the chance to learn a bit more about it.Maybe the show will reinforce my gut feeling that it should never be allowed to happen, maybe not but you cant slam something you have no experiance and understanding of.

I dont see how you can compare a poor people killing a horse bred for meat to a rider beating their horse?

LW would survive without over use of the whip, the herders we saw last night would not survive without the meat their horses provide.

Have you read the comments people are making though. Many of them are POSITIVE. Education is good, debate is good, seeing things from both sides is good.

Look what we have all learned and look how we are all talking about it. You personally may not like it but it has done something.

Well, I think I have seen more than enough about bullfighting to last me my lifetime. We learnt a lot about it when I was learning spanish at school - we had to learn about the culture obviously as part of it, and have seen numerous programmes showing full bull 'fights' (I don't see it as a fight as in no way is it fair).

Seeing the audience participating by stabbing the animal with darts as it passes them, watching the bull panting and distressed and just trying to defend itself and then being finished off, by which point it is that exhausted it has no fight left is not for me. I can't remember all the different stages - ie the matador etc etc and what comes before but it's a fairly long drawn out process and yes I can't deny generally the horses look fantastic but it isn't enough to detract from what they are involved in.

ok bunny hugger means:

if you object in any way to the slaughter of horses

if you Dare to question any of the slaughter houses........

if you are winning an argument and they cant argue their point any more, you are a bunny hugger......

these are all observation ive made and have that have gone on for months on this forum, , i would like to see intelligent debate and not resort to just calling people Bunny Huggers!!!!!

As for the programme in question i watched it and found it really interesting, i knew these horses would end up on the plate, just like if they were cattle farmers!

These horses wouldnt be alive and free range if they were not bred for a reason!!

However the actual way of killing the animal itself is one of the most drawn out ive ever seen!! Like has been said already they have access to a satalite dish, so why not pop a bullet in the animals head!!! And i dont want to hear the excuse they have been doing it for years/it their way/they know no different/they are men/its a difficult thing for them!!!!!! poppycock!!!! We use to bludgen hunted animals to death and drag it to the cave!!!!!!!

As for the next week i would just like to know if im gonna have to watch a bull bleed to death????? I would really like to know and when i need to turn over!!

No one is saying education / debate is not good, but the people not condemning this are not the ones having their head stoved in with an axe are they, its the subject that is disgusting. If the subject was a human being killed would we still want to watch to be educated etc or is it just a step too far. I am sure some cultures probably murder disabled children because they can't work the land etc but we don't have a documentary on it do we because it defies the boundaries of decency.

I think this whole debate is based on where you stand in terms of considering animals chattels without any significance or if you dare show a bit of humanity / compassion. I also think where you stand depends on where you live in that I think those that are quick to call everyone ' bunny huggers' are traditional country people who see nature at its worst and are not easily shocked and those who haven't been brought up this way find this sort of brutality totally alien.

I have no problem with horses being killed for meat if thats what a culture eats but I don't see the need for the BBC to show something so disgusting.

pinktiger - thank you for making that clear! I shall definitely have to be labelled as one then. Funny thing is i don't really like bunnies that much (vicious little things!)

Ok, I find that a little bit offensive so I think I will withdraw from the debate now.

I don't see how this is ' offensive' tbh

but I agree I've also had enough, Its a debate that evokes really strong feelings. I've said how I feel and others are free to do the same.
