I know there have been lots of posts regarding the hike in insurance premiums etc. I have a general question which I hope you may be able to help me with. If I have just started a new claim 4 weeks ago for my boy with the NFU. Do I have to stay with them at renewal to ensure I can contiune claiming until October 2012 or the £5k limit on vets fees?

Or can I change at renewal, but the NFU still honour my claim?

Not sure of the legalities behind it all.

My premium has gone up £28 a month which whilst I understand they are paying big vet bills for him, still seems an awful lot. I understand they have a business to run.

Thanks guys :)

No, you should not have to remain with them. In general, with most horse claims you have 12 mths from the onset of the condition/start date of the issue to continue claiming for it, irrespective of whether you renew or not.

However, CHECK your policy wording!

No, I had a claim in progress when I cancelled my policy when I sold my last horse, treatment started in March, policy cancelled in July with 5 months left to run. As long as you own the horse then 12 month limit. Submitted invoices in July, paid in full in October.
