NI horses being eaten in Europe

OMG. That is us, we are in "Europe"! We also eat cows, chickens and sheep

What is the world coming to.

If horses are dispatched correctly with minimum stress in UK and then meat travels on the hook--that is humane. What is not humane is travelling horses hundreds of miles through Ireland--ferry to France then hundreds more miles to slaughter if that is what this article is suggesting.
I hope the true facts can be clarified.

Then the thread title is misleading IMO especially as I believe 6000 horses were slaughtered on our shores for the meat markets last year.

It seems the focus of the article was actually horses who were given drugs finish up in the food chain. Yes.

We know there are horses here in France, where horsemeat is eaten, going for slaughter without passports.

If the horse DOES have a passport so what? My vets never ask to see the slaughter declaration on my horses' passports, never enter drugs prescribed, and in any case I can buy drugs from a local pharmacy WITHOUT a vet letter.

As far as horses going for slaughter in concerned, a recent post stated that TB's for slaughter in the UK spent a week in layerage at the abbattoir.

I regard that as cruel. A horse which has lived in the lap of luxury all its life will spend a week in the company of strange horses, without the care to which it has been accustomed, surrounded by the smells and noise of 'slaughter' must find this very stressful.

Farmers who care abut their lambs and pigs take them to slaughter on the same day..don't our horses deserve the same?

I think if we started eating horse meat instead of whinging about other countries were it is normal behaviour we may care a little more about the welfare issue in this country.

A bit squemish us Brits ( when it suits us to be!).

A new idea for the forum perhaps.........horse rearing, riding and recipes for beginners? lol lol

I think its disgusting and that programme was awful to watch, did u see the clipped horse going into get slaughtered, it was perfect looking

I have a monster at home but no matter how bad he is I could never do that with him

I thought it was a very good program, I can never understand why people can be so hyper sensitive about horses being slaughtered. There are worse ways to go.

I too cannot see the problem of horses being slaughtered humainly as long as it is on these shores and they do not have to endure long journeys abroad in cramped conditions before slaughter.

Should we not be more concerned about the live ones that endure suffering on a day to day basis.

It may have looked perfect, but was it perfect? Did it have some illness/injury you could not see, some dangerous behavioural problem perhaps?

I do wish that Brits would get over horses being slaughtered. Mostly it is done humanely, sometimes it is the only humane thing an animal has ever come across. I had a donkey destroyed yesterday, she was shot at home. Her life ended there and then, as does any horse going to slaughter for meat. What really is the differene?

Having watched the programme I thought it was very well balanced and dealt with the issue sensitively.

I also have no problem with horses being slaughtered humanely.
There were some very interesting points regarding passporting and whether horses with drugs in their systems were being sent for human consumption.

The headline was quite sensationalist...but in (our) defence, the writers very seldom have a say in headlines in large media organisations, it's what snappy and what fits that counts, much to my own chagrin on more than one occassion.

I Know i'm being soft and oversensitive but i just cannot stand the thought of horses that have put their trust in humans, ending up in a place like potters. Just thinking of the fear they must feel in their last few hours makes me feel sick. I know they are better off dead than being mistreated but looking at the footage of potters i just couldn't send any horse there

I have to say that personally I don't agree with horses being slaughtered for meat to be honest. People will argue it's no different to cows, pigs or sheep etc but i disagree. To me it is more likened to slaughtering dogs to be eaten. There is such a big sporting, leisure not to mention therapy industry based around horses whereas the same can't be said for farm animals so this is where it differs in my opinion.

If I buy a horse it is more than just a competition animal to me (although yes i do compete) and my intention would always to be to keep that animal to the end and then it would not be sent to a slaughterhouse to be disposed of. It's just not something I agree with.

And, yes (before anyone jumps on me for being hypocritical etc etc) I am vegetarian and have been since I was a small child and in my idea of a 'perfect world' we wouldn't slaughter animals en mass for our general greed but then that isn't a realistic view is it. Ideally though i wish people had to kill the animals themselves and didn't expect to get cheap meat everyday from a supermarket ( I was shocked to hear this morning that 1 in 10 adults don't know what a sheep looks like!) - ahh but then I digress!
