there aren't any really nice ones
lol
weston is a no no IMO
brean is quite nice if you know the tides, I think someone on here goes regularly so may be of great help
Yep I dont think any of them are particularly 'safe'
I took my girl to Brean once when we'd got our dates wrong and thought that there was a competition on at Woodspring (now Hand Equestrian). It was great fun, but again there was lots of quicksand to try to steer clear of, and we decided there and then we'd not go to the same beach again as it was too risky. If I had the choice, I'd go to the south coast instead - there are some stunning horse friendly beaches in Devon/Dorset but it's a long way from Bristol!
berrow and brean are fine if you are careful and stay near the dunes, and are careful at the breandown end there are a few bad patches but I dont normally get that far. bad patches are normally browner and you just have to keep a bit of an eye on the depth of your hoofprints if the sand is wet. It is better if you can go with someone who knows it first time so they can point out the bad bits to you, they are pretty much always in the same place. Sometimes the places I see horses scares me. I have ridden down their for years, first with someone who knew it well.
I have never had a problem and have organised group RC rides etc down there all last winter.
You can park on the beach at either at this time of year for free. We park on the beach at berrow and normally go up to the lighthouse burnham way then back up to the caravan park brean way which takes about 1.5 hours with canters.
You do need to check the tide, the farther out the better for parking etc.
PM if you want any more info or accompanying as might be able to sort something.
If you come across the bridge, there are some lovely rides in South Wales. Merthyr Mawr in Bridgend is lovely - beautiful 20-25 minute hack through the sand dunes to the beach but you have to have a permit. I have an annual one but I assume you can buy one off ones. I have the contact details in work so pm me and remind me on tuesday as I'm not in tomorrow.
Kenfig Pool is slightly further along the M4, between Bridgend and Port Talbot but it's literally 5 minutes from the motorway so might be easier to get to if you don't know the area and probably won't take any longer as the roads to MM are quite windy. The dunes aren't so pleasant, but the beach is much longer and you're less reliant on the tides as there's more beach. You don't need a permit for there, but they do have wardens who tell you off if you're not on the bridlepath as there are some very rare flowers growing in the dunes, so get a good map.
i have ridden on weston beach and loved it, can only go on certain times of year tho. brean beach is great, every time i've been it's been really windy down the brean down end so wrap up well! sand bay's a lovely beach but only small but you can go straight up weston woods from there - it's a great ride.
Brean/Berrow is lovely!! We went there last year on Boxing day to get away from the Mendip Hunt (we don't hunt but our boys have with previous owners and get stressy if they hear it) It was the best Boxing Day EVER!!
