Following the sad death of our old boy on Monday, my mum today received a card from our vet who put him down. The card was hand written (so not just an admin thing) and said amongst other things how horses did not live to his age by chance and it was down to our care and management.

I just thought it was a really nice thing for the vet to do (although it does make you well up a bit reading it). He's been our vet for years and has seen us through a few horses but he's never done that before so I just thought it was very touching.

Pointless post really but just thought I'd share :)

Sorry to hear about your loss. :(

My vet also sent me a hand written card pretty much straight away after losing my old mare, and included a packet of forget-me-not seeds which I thought was lovely. It's great when they go the extra mile.

ETA I was touched by the above, but nothing prepared me for the long letter my friend and YO sent me detailing all my girl's funny little quirks. I bawled for ages after reading that and it still makes me tear up when I read it 18 months down the line.

It is a nice thing to do. I sometimes think we forget that vets are human too and they are touched by the things they deal with.

The other day my vet was on the yard and mentioned that his next call to was PTS a clients old horse. He said it with an involuntary sigh and I understood that he had a heavy heart.

I so sorry you lost your old boy and I'm sure your vet hit the nail on the head with his obvious respect for your good care of him.

That's really lovely but I think a letter like that would do the same to me!

Vets arr busy and hard working people.
But they are human and have feelings too.

They must have favourite owners and horses.

Your vet sounds lovely.
A nice thing of them to do.

I'm not sure favourites as such but I guess this vet knows we only ever call him out if it's really needed and he is always very good at coming quickly. He doesn't show much emotion though to be honest and sometimes he can come across as being a bit off almost (although I don't think he is, he's just not 'chatty'). Therefore it was nice to see he'd taken time to write the card (he has relatively neat writing for a vet!)

So sorry for you loss.
We got a handwritten card fro our local practice when Ruby was PTS and also one from the consukting vet and stable staff who looked after her the 7 weeks she was with them. Broke my heart again when I got them but felt that it was a lovely if them to do that.

Our vet always writes the nicest card when one of our dogs, cats or horses die. He's been our vet for 30 years and is SO wise and kind. I've never known an animal of ours misbehave when he's treating them.

It does make such a difference to have a card like that. But I'm so sorry for your loss. You must be miserable.

It is nice when they just give that little extra thought (mind you, we've not had the bill yet for the out of hours call out!). It still does feel a bit odd and sad but you know, he was 29 which I think is a great age. He didn't suffer through a long, drawn out illness or have a lot of pain. Yes, it was sudden and not pleasant for us but I don't think he knew much about it and any suffering he was going through was over swiftly. That I am grateful to the vet for.

Its nice when vets do that, The nicest but sadest letter I had when I lost my old girl was from the little girl who lived next to her field, It said how much she would miss seeing her with her long soft mane and differant coats. It was so sweet but made me cry.

Lucky you - we got a whopping great bill. And she was insured! Apparently Petplan don't cover the costs of being PTS.
. They do pay for the loss of your horse though don't they? They certainly paid my friend (eventually) when she had to have her horse pts.
I sent a thank you card to my vet and farrier. They had looked after my girl for 20 years, and to be honest, they must feel a sense of loss too, and I don't mean in the wallet! It's a wonderful thing to have such a great relationship with your vet, you need to be able to trust them so much, after all, they have the life of your most treasured possession in their hands. OP, your vet sounds a lovely caring person.

How lovely.

We got one from our vet when we had our little kitten put to sleep. Now I say kitten, he was 2 years old and never grew any bigger than an 8 week old kitten due to the fact someone had tried to stand on him and kill him, so he had growth defects, epilepsy, diabetes, cerebal palsy, brain damage etc. The vet asked if we could rehome him from her and we did. We had him for 2 years and throughout that time he had multiple fits, hypos, you name it. Normally we would catch them and get him to the vet asap to be treated, but one night he did it through the night when our other cat went out(she used to howl if he started fitting) and when we wokeup her was in a sort of coma, so our vet put him down.

She wrote the most beautiful card with a poem thanking us for giving him a good life whilst he was with us etc, af for rehoming him. It was lovely.
