Oh dear I've had a disatstrous evening. My horse was turned out with YO's horse for the first time on Friday and they seemed to get along fine. Today I fetched my boy in and YO's horse was stood a little way away. I went out for a hack and when I got back, I could see YO and her mum stood in the field with Dessie (her horse). I put my horse in a stable and rushed over to see what had happened and it looks as though they've had some sort of an argument, as poor Dessie had a big scrape on the front of his hock, but worse than that there was a hole in the point of his hock.

The vet came out and drove down to him - she felt in the wound and it seems there has been a lot of damage - she could feel the tendon sheath had been ruptured and she said they'd have to get him in to the vets to operate on the hock. So we had to get the trailer down to him and virtually carry the poor lad on and YO has taken him to horspital.

I feel awful about it and I'm so worried

YO has done so much for me and been so fab I can't believe this has happened. She bred Dessie herself - he's only 5 - and he went to his first endurance event a couple of weeks ago and did so well - she was really chuffed with him. She has lost 3 horses in the last year through old age and he is the only one she has left that's hers.

Please can you send some vibes for him? I hope he's going to be ok

Unfortunately this is the problem with horses isn't it and there's not a lot we can do about it. Hopefully in this case the outcome will be positive. He has age on his side and at least they feel they can operate. Hope all goes well.

Thanks LadyT. I feel so awful about it - I feel so sorry for the poor horse and for her - he was doing so well, now at best he's going to be on 3 months BR

I just hope he comes back and it isn't worse - they won't know until they X-Ray

At least you care alot of other owners would not even bat an eye. One of mine had a hock operation a long time ago and has made a full recovery. Yes the box rest was painfully long but he got there in the end. I have my fingers crossed for him. Please don't worry to much, horses will be horses.

Wishing him lots of luck.I know how you are feeling I think my boy kicked my daughters mare who is on loan the midges were driving them crazy and he stamps his feet. She was ok in the end not tendon just bruising lets hope his isnt as bad as you think.

Everything crossed, hope hes ok.
My horse got kicked by YO's horse and got a fractured Radius. They were and are best of friends and I think one of there games got a bit too rough.
I never felt any bad towards YO afterall these things happen and its not her fault. Horses do stupid things. I would have been mortified if it was the other way round so I can understand how you are feeling but Im sure she realises how you feel.
YO was great, transported us to Leahurst, really helped me with the months of box rest and sorted out a small paddock for him.
Yes you do get some people who think its all your fault but most rational people understand.
Please try not to beat yourself up about it.
