i dont know why im posting this or where to begin but here goes. we have the pleasure of grazing in a large field of about 9 acres which we pay per horse. land owner not in to horses so leaves us to it. 4 other people rent this field everyone is polite ,friendly, and keeps there own routine so hardly see each other .last month a new girl showed up seemed ok. new pony, she seemed to be just new to owning and did not know many local hacks so my friend and i said we could hack out with her and show her some safe rides.well it soon became clear this girl(i say girl but woman of nearly 30)could not ride at all and i mean at all .pony was all over the place and being too excitable as sold as safe for BEGINNER it was getting dam right dangerous so had a swap about friend gave girl her delightful bombproof cob ,friend rode my youngster ,and i took the pony .pony walked home with a lot of headshaking jumping adn some of it we even went backward .all safetly home eventually.girl says she thinks she may have bitten off more than she can chew(understatment of the century) after talking to her for a few days after she was scared to ride it ,watched her try to get on once and she could not get on her fella had to lift her and even then she was leaning backward on him so he could not get her on it 13.2 .and it also became clear that she had not even the basics in horse care .we could not beleive the things she would come up with ,im not claiming i know it all but bloody hell .why the heck did anyone sell her this horse .she thought once its shoes were on the,d be changed every year for a new riding season.she would just cheak it once or twice a week.these are just an example of the things she would say but you get the idea.my friend and i talked about it all and decided we would try to persuade her to take said pony back.for not just his own safety but for hers aswell .we had told her on loads of occations please do not go through field with bucket or treats as one horse will kick you for food ,and dont feed other horses at all they are not hers but she would not listen we thought we smelt drink on her too.so we put are plan together as politly as possible to convince her to return horse she was also not getting on with it any more anyway .next day friend and i arrive home from ride it see horsebox outside .we go to put ours away ,from over the hill comes said girl walking at very funny angle all bent backwards and crying ,she had gone to catch hers with treats for all and horse that kicks had done just that then stood on her for not dropping the treats.we went to help but it was as plain as day that she was real drunk and did not really seem hurt just attention seeking. so we carried on doing our own to let her and fella load pony . he did, she did not ,she stopped to feed our horses treats on the way out .shes gone and she aint coming back .turns out she well known to have problem will drink .lady that sold him to her has said she will not take him back but will keep him at hers and teach her to ride it . eh . ps some morphine and xray and home from docs same night .like i said i dont know why i have shared my tale with you but hay ho

What an awful thing to happen. I really dont know why people buy horses when they know nothing about them. My sister had some friends who bought an unbroken foal from Bampton market (nr Tiverton) They didnt have a clue and bought a packet of porage oats and a pack of hay bedding like you would use for a guinea pig. Luckily, they sold it on after a few days.

At least the pony was taken back before any real damage was done to either the rider or the pony. Hopefully it hasn't put her off owning a horse, but it has given her the lesson of knowing she should learn more, and invest in a safe schoolmaster type.

I don't understand why people think they can own horses with no knowledge at all. A friend of mine from uni emailed me the other day to say he's decided to buy a horse. When I said (nicely of course!) that he needed to learn to ride first and learn stable management, he replied with "well I used to ride for a bit when I was young so I know it all already".... A disaster waiting to happen

It is amazing what sort of people by ponies from these 'off the moor' horse sales.

I was out hacking once and saw 4 women (all about 40ish) leading some little foals around on the common. Went over to talk to them and they had bought the foals fresh off exmoor (I think, could have been a different moor) at a gypsy type horse sale and were keeping them in their garage on their council estate!!! Fortunately they sold 2 of the ponies and then they kept the other one all on its own on its own in a couple of acres of scrubland at the bottom of their road. this scrubland was owned by a developer who wasn't yet doing anything with it and he didn't even know the pony was on it!!! The pony was fine in theory (had enough to eat and drink and some shelter) but they didn't have a clue what to to do with him, he was horribly naughty cos they never taught him basic ground manners and of course he was desperately lonely.

Eventually the property developer who owned the land found out and chucked her off, she came over to the local inner-city small holding where I kept my horse, wanting to keep her pony there. Didn't want to pay any money mind - I think she thought it was some sort of 'free nanny' charity horse service. The small holding said 'no' - understandably cos she didn't want to pay and we didn't have the grazing for another horse, also everyone could see that she had a drink problem and also would expect the 3 of us with our horses there and the lads who worked the stock to do all the work for her... she sold the pony in the end but it was pretty shocking what people will do. Poor little mite - I did a bit to help her but she really didn't have a clue and I felt the more I assisted her, the more she would be thinking that keeping the pony was a good idea.

I was interested in what you had to say until you started (imo) slating this woman by including the fact that you could smell drink and that it turns out she has problems with drink. What has that got to do with the fact that someone very irresponsible sold her a pony? You should be slating this person and not the woman who bought the pony. If she has a drink problem it should not be bandied around by gossips like yourself. Alcohol abuse is a terrible illness for those who drink the damn stuff and for those who love that person.
I dont know why you shared your tale either-have you nothing better to do or do you want an OOOooooh reaction and a pat on the back for being such a caring horse person? Mairi.

OMGG, I didnt know that drink was an automatic nono if you ride or own an equine

- You must have had a couple that day if you didnt know which moor you were on! Mairi, lifting her wine glass to all horse owners.."cheers"!

sorry mairi .if i tell you that it was a riding school that had sold horse to her after she had been for 3 lessons on a lead rein i was just trying not to tell the whole story to try and not give to much away.im not anti drink or anti begginers with horses ,we did try to help honest i just can not believe the whole sorry story and had to get it of my chest .im not a do gooder either but would you have wanted to feel partly responsable for any thing that happened through her drink problem . and it very sad for her as yes i agree drinking is an illness

Firstly I suggest you make certain of your facts before you insinuate that people have been drinking while riding their horses. I know EXACTLY which moor I was on - I simply cannot recall which moor these ponies came from originally, perhaps if you read my post more carefully you will be able to understand that?

There is nothing wrong with drinking - having a drink PROBLEM however, is different altogether and I can well understand and support not wanting someone exhibiting this kind of problem/illness/whatever you want to call it around young people or tolerate it on their livery yard. The very idea that alcohol and horses is a 'nono' is utterly ridiculous. Perhaps you are unclear as to what I meant by 'drink problem' but I am NOT talking about recreational drinking, I am talking about alcoholism, heavy drinking every day during the day when you are in charge of small children and animals. Is that clearer to you now?

It seems to me that the OP posted this because they wanted to have a rant and get a bit of support in the fact that it had annoyed them. It would annoy me too.
