I'm living in an absolute nightmare! I bought my Cob in March 2023 and he's the most well-mannered, quiet horse you'd ever come across. He's lived out since he was a baby and box-walks/sweats profusely/chews the door and bars/kicks the door when in a stable so he can only live out 24/7. The first yard I put him in was 5 minutes from my house but the turnout was so restricted he only used to be out a few hours a day and there were long periods he'd have to be stabled 24/7 as the owner didn't allow horses out when it was raining. So I moved him to another yard 30 mins from my house (only place turnout is allowed 24/7) and it's been the worst thing ever. My horse has just been broken and they don't allow any lunging/free schooling or anything like that. You're not allowed to be in the arena unless you ride your horse so I can't do any ground exercises with him. My stable floods any time it rains and the mats weren't placed properly so bedding got under them and my horse keeps tripping (he's only in there for brushing and feeding etc). The paddocks are so horsesick that he's literally just eating clover and other weeds (no grass). He was getting a bit "girthy" recently and I had him tested for ulcers etc and my vet said it's likely he's eating something in the paddock that's upsetting his stomach. I found out today that he's being fed fresh grass clippings every day!! I informed the yard owner that it causes colic and that I don't want them in my horses field and he said "well that's just what I do" so my horse remains with a sore stomach. The yard is open from 9am to 6pm and closed Sundays and Mondays and they don't feed him or look after him (he's totally unsupervised in the field) so I dread to think if something happened to him. Once I called the vet on a Monday as it was an emergency as he couldn't pee (he had flystrike in his sheath) and I got in trouble!! You're literally not allowed to do anything - no bareback riding, no jumping above the height they assign you, no grazing them on any grass anywhere, no one's allowed to come with you to the yard unless they're a relative, no one's allowed to ride your horse (not even my little brother), they have bales of bedding there but they're only for the owners horses, liveries have to use this damp sawdust in tonne bags left out in the rain, there's droppings left everywhere and horses are slipping, there's no cameras. I could go on all day. Not only that, but I'm paying full livery price (€100) for diy livery!! They don't do anything for you! They don't rug or turn your horse out, they won't clean your stable, they won't feed your horse, they don't even check on them! Their own horses are only giving a handful of hay in the morning and night so they stand there for hours during the day hungry. The owner's kids are so obnoxious and leave mess everywhere and irritate and scream around the horses. The owner is absolutely awful, he has serious anger problems and he shouts psychotically at everyone for the smallest things. Not only all that but they have absolutely no education whatsoever. Their school ponies are brought in and tied up from 8am to 7pm with no hay or water and they're all deformed due to such ill fitting tack. This is only the tip of the iceberg. Everyone would be right to say "move" but there's nowhere to move to - all yards in my area keep the horses in over winter. My next best option (winter grass livery) would be an hour away and I'm so nervous about moving again incase there's a problem with that yard!! AAAGGHHHHH!!!!

Your horse, your responsibility to look after him properly, that means having somewhere suitable to keep him. I assume you are paying £100 a month which isnt very expensive but the fact that a livery yard is closed at the weekend would ring alarm bells for most people and how is it DIY if it’s closed two days a week. Either find some where else to keep him or sell him and maybe also ask your friends for some help. I suspect you aren’t very experienced,

Yes I've never been to any of the livery yards in my area. I had no idea these things went on as this place had a good reputation (but who's going to leave a bad review when everyone knows you? They might be afraid to if you know what I mean 🥺). It's actually €100 a week,€400 a month and feed isn't included. Yes it bothered me they were closed two days but I couldn't keep my poor boy locked in a stable anymore so it was the best option at the time. I appreciate your Outlook and I agree fully. I actually have 20 years in horses but not in the current area I live in hence why I'm so stuck with liveries!!

If you really can't move him then I'm afraid you need to sell him. You can't continue to keep him in a place that could kill him with grass clippings, can you?
.
Yes you're 100% right. My only other option is to rent 3 acres which are 30 mins from my house and has no lighting and water has to be brought in. I think I might

I don’t really care what the other options are even this horse being kept in over winter would be better than what you’re describing.
Fresh grass clippings will KILL him
Why did you move here?
Yes I agree. I moved here as they had a very good reputation and it was the only place offering 24/7 turnout. I also didn't know about any of the issues before I went there. I suspect it had a good reputation because everyone was afraid to say anything bad. The farrier comes up the least he can he's so afraid of the owners rage

Most terrible yards have 1 redeeming feature at least, but the yard youre describing sounds like it has absolutely nothing going for it.

Id move, anywhere has to better than where you are!

Easier said than done i know but can you give a country region even, so folk can make yard suggestions…even if not the county, the region could bring helpful suggestions e.g east anglia. Theres loads of yards that dont advertise all the time that have space, you might get luck on here as the members cover all over uk, some ireland.

It's got 2 arenas, and quiet hacking routes, I think that's just about everything! I'm actually here in Ireland, south east 😊 Thank you for your suggestion!

Im mid west ireland, surprised there’s not decent 24/7 turnout in your region. Have you looked on donedeal equine section, ‘equine services’ subsection? Theres always different yards advertising there all over the country.

Here’s the most recent listings:

To be honest, i thought initially this thread is a joke or wind up. I cant even believe you considered a yard that is closed two days a week anyway? And only open 9-6 .. What about the welfare of the horse on those days? It could have world class arenas and it still wouldnt matter.

They couldn’t even pay me to livery there 😣

Nearly all of us horse owners have a 30 minute commute to our horses 😃 move immediately 😩

There's two I've got my eye on but they're both far away 🥺 I think I might have to move him for his safety and mine. Thank you for sharing

Move him.

If you're really struggling with advertised places, go on Google Maps and look for any properties near you that have an arena, then go door knocking! Or just drive around looking for horses in fields and ask at nearby houses.

You never know, you may come up trumps.

That yard is a total disgrace and the owners sound like complete idiots. Get your own grazing if you can but it's not fair to you or your horse to remain there any longer I'm afraid

If the surface is new I can understand the reluctance for lunging until its bedded down a little but the hours and the cut grass is dangerous as is the horse sick over grazed paddock - a massive red flag for grass sickness.

Yes I 100% agree. I will be moving him, I must just find the best place. Unfortunately it looks like I'll be travelling 50 mins or so for it

As you’re already paying €100 p/w livery, there’s a fair number charging that for full(ish) livery - where they turn out, rug, feed, hay daily - so even if your boy for the moment ends up 1 hour away, that means you wouldnt have to go to the yard daily, necessarily.
Obviously you’re more likely to travel daily at the beginning of a move to check-out things run smoothly for him, but if you ride 3x per week, youd only need to travel 3x per week.
See it as a stop-gap yard, until you find something decent closer?

OK so you are not going to like what I'm about to say here, but it is just an observation.

You have been to TWO yards in what I assume is a relatively short period of time. Both of those yards you describe under the heading of "Nightmare".

Now either BOTH yards really WERE - and are - awful (and your current one sounds frankly horrendous), OR you are not making good choices for your horse. Yes appreciating the difficulty you are obviously having in finding anywhere remotely half-decent, but to leave a horse at the place where you are now where you know he is being fed grass clippings is frankly playing with his life. You and the other owners are basically playing Russian Roulette with your horses' lives and it is sadly only a matter of time before a tragedy occurs.

I am trying to be understanding, and generous, and it feels like you are very much on your own and not knowing where to turn. There should be local FB horsey groups where you could post on and ask for help and say you are urgently seeking suitable livery. All I will say (as a YO myself) that at this time of the year it is difficult to be able to offer 24/7 turnout; YO's are not being difficult, it is about trying to save enough grass for everyone to last through the winter, and that is a huge challenge at this time of year.

If, and I say if, you cannot source anywhere suitable and the only option is to leave your horse at this yard, then I would advise you to urgently consider trying to find a share or loan home. I do feel that you need someone to come alongside you and help you source somewhere: a good horsey chum who could perhaps come out and view a few yards with you and ask questions. Two set of eyes are always better than one.

Sorry if I've been harsh with you, but I'm frankly appalled that horses can be left by any owner on a yard where the YO feeds grass chippings. Incredible.

This does seem to be a bit of a wind up when looked at more closely? £100 a week for DIY livery but you’re not allowed to go 2 days a week. Grass clippings put in the field - what do you mean by grass clippings? Are we talking cut grass as used on some yards or actual lawn mower clippings? You say you’ve 20 years experience but the young girl who sometimes comes to ‘help’ me would tell you she’s 10 years experience which when looked at more closely is a weekly group riding lesson. Your best option would be to use the £400 a month and find somewhere your horse can go over the winter where he’ll be safe and Msybe pick things up in the spring. If he’s recently broken he could be quite young and may benefit from some time off over winter. Equally if the first yard was a ‘nightmare’ it could be that he would benefit from some experience of a yard routine and equally you would benefit from having a buddy to help you settle in. Good luck whatever you decide.
