Friday was the worst day of my life. Got a call from my mum at about 11.30am whilst I was at work to say that Marey (my 5 months pregnant pride and joy) had got a cut and it looked 'quite bad' - I knew if it was just a scratch then Mum wouldn't have phoned me - and that she thought I should leave work and look for myself.
When I got there I knew straight away we needed a vet asap. She had a graze about 3 inches long around the back on her upper cannon area, near hind, plus a hole of about the size of a 20p piece and it was so deep I could see tendon tissue flapping out - gross I know. Whilst I got the hose on it our vet was called and on his way immediately. She didn't seem to be in any pain but she's such a tough old bird so I knew not to trust her reactions! Vet arrived, had a poke and then decided to lightly sedate her. Of course this is bad enough for a pregnant mare but after clipping the area he said there was something hard in the wound. As soon as I glanced at it I knew it was bone - she had an open fracture.
I can't tell you how it feels to hear those words, hospital, now, operation under GA. Not only was I of course worried about poor Marey but also our little foalie too. Felt like I'd been hit by a bus. :-(
Typically, our lorry had it radiator out so I had no transport. Cue me phoning everyone I knew to try and get help, mostly I got answerphones as everyone was at work. It took me a frantic hour of phonecalls to finally get a transporter to come and get us.
She travelled well, it's about 1hr 30min journey and of course I was worried sick. Got there and was relieved to be told (after seeing some pretty spectacular X-rays) that they wouldn't risk her under GA so would try and get all the fragments out under heavy sedation - Which thank god, they managed all but one little fragment that they are sure will be absorbed. The biggest chunk of bone was about 3 inches long and she now has a splint bone that is in two, with the middle bit missing. They hope that the middle section will eventually knit together, only time will tell.
She's recovering well so far but has to stay there until the chances of infection are lower. Stress is our biggest enemy at the moment, for the foal and her.
I went to see her today and took these pics, as you can see she is quite happy there and robbed me for all the treats I got her.
Please can everyone send their positive vibes our way, for both Marey and her foalie. Hopefully she'll heal well and be home soon as we all miss her so much. She's my absolute pride and joy and I really don't know what I'd do if anything happened to her
