Friend of mine's horse nips her when she strokes it. She calls them love bites, I am not so sure having received one myself. However in order not to upset the applecart by reproving her horse yet, what do the experts think?
Affection, taking the mick or attention seeking? I tend to one of the latter two

Hmm. I read something somewhere about this. If she was grooming them it may be affectionate as that is how horses bond with each other, mutual grooming. In any other circumstances however I would say it was naughty and wouldn't tolerate it.

Benji Meldrew will nip/bite. He is generally a grouchy horse..very likely had ulcers at some point, cribs and doesn't specially like being groomed handled unless with kid gloves.
He does get told off when he tries though...just a growl...and he always looks sheepish afterwards but he's too long in the tooth to do too much about it. He rarely makes contact.
I wouldn't be happy if any of my others did it though...

Don mutual grooms me when I'm brushing him by licking my leg (and occasionally my bum!) he nips when he finds the seam on the leg of my jodhs. I tell him off for using his teeth, but he's not biting as such...

Dragon Nips after my mum has been around, she's a carrot machine as far as he's concerned. I find giving him a metal curry comb to nip does the trick on one go... until mum visits again!!!
