Hi everyone
I am hoping to change my current towing vehicle to one which will comfortably tow two horses
I think i have narrowed it down to either the nissan terrano or the landrover discovery - I dont have a huge budget - less than £5k preferably !!

what do you all think - especially important is stability and reliability...

chocolate muffins to all replies !:)

Love my disco 😍 this is my 3rd (updated each time, now have 52 plate td5). Have had pajero, trooper and frontera in past, disco for me has been best. Have 17hh Dutch Warmblood and 16.2 TB, tows both in Ifor 510 with ease. Have had couple issues mechanically but hey, it's not new and been just wear and tear. Fuel wise, out and about I get about 35 to gallon (tend to just chug around lol), towing that drops to about 18-20 with neds etc on board.

Can recommend going to landyzone.co.uk, lurk around and get loads of useful info etc to help decide.

No experience of nissans, but love love love my disco! Happy hunting! 😃

Im the opposite - I havent had a landy ( got told to not touch any with someone elses bargepole!) but I HAVE had Terranos - two of them. Loved loved loved them and wouldnt hesitate to get another :)

Why on earth would you want a Landrover?! Apart from the Defender, it's the worst car known to man for reliability and blimmin' expensive when things go wrong unless you're intimate with a mechanic.

110% Terrano. They tow much better than disco's, more reliable, more for your money. Just better in every way IMO. I have experience of both, and many other 4x4's and the Terrano is excellent.

Be aware of rust around the sills though, but if you get a good one you can't go wrong.

Terrano every time for me too. If you get a good Disco they're good, but they are few & far between; Terrano's are generally more reliable and cheaper to run.

I had the Maverick which is exactly the same as the Terrano just badged Ford, would have another tomorrow. Reliable, never got stuck in mud, flood or snow, VERY comfy and pulls like a train with it's 2.7 TD not too bad on fuel either.
Parts are cheap if you know where to look, one great site for Japanese 4x4's is here:

http://japanese4x4spares.co.uk/

Lower prices than buying from Nissan or Ford

I would not have a Landy despite liking the look of the Defenders as have had several friends with Freelanders, Discos and Defenders who have all said they are ok when running, but when they go wrong it's very expensive and the general running costs are high, including basic servicing.
You need deep pockets to own a Landy of any type.

I've had both, disco was a right pain, it ate starter motors and had the "3 Amigos" issue ( 3 warning lights would come on randomly which isn't an issue unless it does it at MOT in which case it is an automatic fail! It died on the M1 the first week I had it and the stealership made me out to be a neurotic driver because again the issue was random... Eventually it did it when I picked the kids up from school and crawled onto the forecourt and practically dragged the manager out by his collar to try for himself. Strangely it then got fixed.
Now have an old V reg Terrano and it's a star, cheaper to run as not permanent 4 wheel drive and more reliable. I treated her to a new timing chain which was costly (£1000) but I plan in having her for ever.
Too many gadgets on the disco to go wrong.... Disco cost over £20K and terrano cost £1000 plus knackered ford focus estate!
No contest!
( better still sell car and trailer and buy a cheap lorry! ;)

Terrano's are ace. There was some ex coast vehicles advertised on Ebay recently, within your budget and super low milage <30K! Not seen this last week but it might be worth looking out for one. They were really clean and solid underneath too.

I have a landrover defender & wouldnt swap it for anything ! Plus cheaper on tax & insurance than the discos. you could get a decent 1 for 5k

I've had both. Disco lasted me 4months and cost me £1500 in parts before it died! Nissan terrano I had for 3years and cost all of £20 in parts the whole time! I only paid £500 for the car aswell! Only sold it as went down to small car due to work.

Quite apart from reliability, Terranos are much better value for money. When I was looking to replace my Trooper a couple of years ago I looked at both, and a Disco of the same year was about £1k more than the Terrano. I got the Terrano and am very happy with it (once I had sorted a few initial problems the garage washed their hands of - get it thoroughly checked before you buy!)
The only reason I can think of to buy a Disco is it looks more traditional ;) - oh, and it has 2 sun roofs :)

I had a SWB Commercial Terrano 2.7 did 180K miles by which time the fuel injector pump was worn out gutless to the point of being dangerous and it had gone through at least 3 heater Matrix wich is a real issue with them. the 2.7 is very old technology try to get the 3.0 better on fuel and a bit more uumph.
