I have just put a deposit on an N reg Nissan Terrano..2.7ltr, diesel. 88k miles. Fab condition and is an auto with another gear stick..??? Its been used for towing large caravans etc.
Anyhow...what sort of trailer would be best for pulling 16.2hh horses..?? Im going to hire one for a few months before buying. It will be used mainly for towing one big horse or miniatures...very occasionally 2 big horses.

I have a 2000 plate one - 2nd gear stick is 4WD options. Leave it in the top slot, 2WD or your fuel consumption will be worse than it already is! Next slot down will do you for muddy fields or snowy tracks.

Is it the LWB or SWB?

I had one!! Didn't tow with it (although that was the intention) I will say get it checked by a professional if you haven't already, I had to scrap mine after 12mths (it was also an N reg, metallic blue) as it was about to 'snap it 2' it was that badly corroded underneath - thank goodness I didn't tow with it :eek:

I fricking loved it though and it was referred to as the 'Venga bus' in our house :)

xx

Thanks for the heads up...it was MOT'd end of Feb and I have had someone take a look at it that knows plenty about cars who thinks its a good motor so Im hoping that bodes well :o

I've got a 2004 one (3ltr LWB) and although I had teething troubles and a dealer who didn't seem to understand the concept of warranty, I have to admit it is a good car, tows well and drives like any decent car. I used to have a Trooper and while I loved it to bits, it was a bit laboured at 80 on the motorway - the Terrano just takes it in its stride. Not too thirsty either - I worked it out doing a towing job for a friend and it did 20mpg-ish towing.

I had an auto 3 l turbo deisel a few years ago and towed with it. Loved loved loved that car. Couldn't justify keeping it when I was horseless though :(
Make sure the overdrive button isn't on. Not sure what it does but oh told me to put it on if towing down hill as it improves engine breaking, but it also drops your fuel consumption a fair bit. It was a button on the gear stick.

As for towing it was amazing but check before you tow 2 big horses that it can tow them. Our auto only had a towing capacity of 2 tons and was a 53 plate.

I'm on my second and love them :-) Get it checked underneath and get the brakes checked as both mine have needed new brake pipes. They are brill though!

I love Terranos :) I borrowed my mums all the time so thought id buy one myself. Took forever to find one, bought it & then the turbo went after 4 days :( the garage repaired it but couldn't guarantee the engine wasn't damaged so gave me my money back, I then couldn't find another & was desperate for a car so bought something else instead :( I still borrow my mums though (a 2004 automatic) & it tows an ifor 505 with a 15.3hh warmblood in it with ease xx

Another Terrano fan here, I wouldn't have any other 4x4 :)

They're fab for towing, I've got a 2002 2.7D LWB and have towed a 510 with 2 large horses no problem at all.

Our last trailer-puller was a Terrano. It went really well. We've got a Bateson Ascot which I love, easily takes 2 x 16.2hh's (or my 17.2hh!). Would have a Bateson over an Ifor any day, if not just for their great customer service!

We have had two terranoes. fantastic towers and a nice drive when not towing. Unfortunately the engine in the first one caught fire whilst towing two 16hhers on the motorway but we suspect it was faulty servicing. Didn't stop us buying another one.

Do these work on the more modern Terrano's? Mine have all had sticky clutches I just used to think it was there 'thing' !

Should do, I'll ask my mate. He's on a 4x4 forum, lots of the guys on there have replaced the bushes on theirs too.

It's the bush that goes between the pin and the clutch pedal, where it connects to the master cylinder, think it's plastic originally and it wears out. Don't see why it should be different on later ones.

OK, slight hijack. As we are talking Terranos, I have an M reg. Its great, except... when the weather is cold it starts fine and then after driving for about 500metres it stalls and will keep stalling til it warms up properly. After that it drives perfectly. In the summer no problems atall.

Its been to 2 garages and they don't know what it is. One suggested the deisel pump within the tank but they weren't really sure and this would cost more than the car's worth to fix.

Anyone else had a similar problem?

Have you had anyone run a diagnostic on it? Could be a sensor. Duff glow plugs? Do you service it regularly?

How cold is the weather when it plays up? Diesel goes thick when it's really, really cold.

I have a Terrano 2.7 - its an import and has 153,000 miles on it and still drives well. Its a bit clunky but has just driven me and OH to Download festival with all our gear and that was a 600 mile round trip - we had it serviced and MOT'd before we went - shes on her last legs though - guys said the engine is sound but the bodywork might only last another 18 months or so - she needed some welding this time round. Thats the thing with Nissans, the engines are sound but the bodywork lets them down. I had an Almera too with 100,00 miles on it and it purred like a kitten but failed its MOT and had to be scrapped cause the underside was rusting through and falling to bits :(

Thanks for reply, 1st garage thought glow plugs but didn't improve. Must admit I'm a bit slack on servicing!!
No doesn't need to be really cold, can be anything up to 10 degrees or so but its not even consistent, sometimes its fine at 4/5 degs sometimes not.
Don't even know what a diagnostic is, ha!

Maverick fuel injection systems are very sensetive to any form of restriction in the fuel feed pipes and filter. The slightest restriction and they run like a bag of nails ,because the injection timing shifts. Change the fuel filter and check that the electric fuel heater is working (this is nothing to do with the glow plugs ,it is a heater built into the fuel filter assembly).

I have a Silver 55 plate 3.0 SWB Terrano van, and I love her!
Tows like a dream & she herself has a 750kg Payload which is really handy too. Also has an orange flashing light & floods on the back which are very useful for doing anything in the dark!

We've had 2. Hubby is a mechanic and loves them! Just sold ours though as we wanted something newer, will never understand why they stopped making them!

A diagnostic check is where you take it to a garage with the relevant kit and they plug it in to a gadget which, theoretically, should say what's wrong with it. Unless it's not an electrical- based problem.

Mike007 has a good point about the fuel system.

Weebarney, the clutch pedal bush should fit the later ones too. My mate has posted the question on the 4x4 forum he frequents and is waiting for a definite answer.
