Hi

I have a nissan x trail sve dci 2005 and a newish rice beaufort which has a maximum gross weight of 2600 and an unladen weight of 1020 - what is the maximum weight I can tow? My driving test is post 1997 but I am going to sit my trailer test soon.

Thanks

Presuming this is your car:

Towing capacity on it is 2000kg, if unladen weight of your trailer is 1020kg, you're left with 980kg of weight for horses.

ROG can correct me if what I've said above is wrong.

If taking your B+E test soon that's fine but you wouldnt be able to tow your X-Trail/Rice combination on just your B licence as plated weight of trailer is 2600kg and weight of car is 2050kg, meaning it exceeds the 3500kg limit.

All comments legally ok so far

You can of course be supervised under B+E learner rules with your current set up

If you want to tow under your current B licence then the maximum plated MAM for the trailer must be reduced by the manufacturer from 2600 to 1450 which leaves you with 330 kgs for the horse/load = not going to work

If you want to only ever travel one horse then buying a lightweight trailer - perhaps something like a IFOR HB401/403 - then you could have that plated at 1400 with an empty weight of around 800 and a horse/load of 600
That would work legally for B licence towing with the Xtrail

Thanks for the information, I would not be towing on my own until taking my test.

Once I take my trailer test are the only limitations to do with weight of trailer/load and towing capacity of vehicle?

Yes, in a nutshell, obviously you can't exceed the trailer's MAM either, but essentially, you can tow as much as your car is capable of.

Under B+E rules its simple

1 Find empty weight of trailer

2 Find MAM of trailer

3 Find towing capacity of vehicle

Use the lower of 2 and 3 then deduct 1 - that will give you the weight that can be loaded into the trailer

The towing capacity could be 2000 or 2200 depending on model so take a look at the weight plate on the xtrail which is usually hidden under the bonnet or inside a door pillar - take the top weight (GVW) from the second weight (GTW) and that will give you the towing capacity for your vehicle

Find the towing capacity
Find the trailer plated MAM
Use the lower of those two figures

Find the empty weight of the trailer
Take the empty trailer weight from the lower of the above figures and you get the weight that can be loaded into the trailer
