Nissan X-Trail are they any good? Also another towing question.

Can anyone recommend them as towing cars? Are they reliable and not too expensive to run?

I will be towing one 15.3hh mare that weighs around 500 kg. Also I have worked out that the car weights around 1600 kg, trailer weights 905 kg and horse 500 kg. This would bring me to just over 3 tonnes. Obviously I will have to add weight for any equipment and passengers. I will be taking it to my local weighbridge. Do people think it would be necessary to do my trailer licence based on those weights? To add I do have experience of towing.

Any feedback will be appreciated.
 
Not sure of the weights, but my friend has a Nissan X Trail, she tows the big model Ifor Williams trailer with two 14.2 Welsh cobs in it no problem, it has also towed my 16.2 without issue.

Fuel wise, its not thirsty but not amazing. Around 40 - 45 mpg without the trailer on.
 
I think towing capacity is only a 2000 kg in them. I certainly wouldn't be travelling two in a large ifor with one :eek3:.

We had a terrano OP, much better for towing, even the short wheel base version!
 
I have one. Towing capacity 2 tonnes and so it would struggle to pull 2 horses. I only every travel one and it manges fine although can feel the difference as I used to tow with a jeep that could pull 3.5 tonnes. X-trail much more fuel efficient but a lot more thirsty as expected while towing.
 
I used to have one and would only tow one horse in it. I understood it could only tow upto 2.5 tonnes. Having towed one horse, I wouldn't feel happy towing two as you could really feel it struggle a bit around some corners or up a hill. What I liked about mine was you could switch it in and out of 4 WD so was very economical when not towing unlike a lot of 4 x 4's.
 
I have one and it tows a 900kg trailer and 2 big ponies no problem, so approx 1800kg. Struggles on the hills with anything heavier. Yes you have to go steady up hills. It is nice to drive and fairly economical to run for a 4x4.

What is the tow weight on yours? I am aware it is different for manuals and automatics. IMO they aren't really a towing vehicle, like Nissan's version of a freelander ;).

I certainly don't think any are even 2500 kg, I think max is 2000kg (quoted for the most powerful engine- which is only a 1.6L ;) and if I were towing with it regularly I would want more than 200kg leeway personally and a bit more guts in case of adversity.

It's a manual petrol 2002 so 2000kg. If I wanted to tow two regularly I wouldn't pick it but if (as I do) I want it for everyday driving and occasional towing it's great.
 
Yes :) I expect it depends on your location too :)

I didn't spot that the OP included the car weight in her total (so train weight) so it would possibly be doable for her.

We had an 02 manual SWB 2.7L terrano which I think was 3200kg braked weight. You didn't know you were towing with only one but you certainly felt two hence I would be wary of the smaller SUVs

Trailer plated weight (probably 2340 in this case) plus vehicle GVW (Xtrails around 2200) must not total more than 3500
If my weights are correct then the current total is about 4540 which is way over the B licence towing max of 3500


Nissan Xtrail with GVW 2200 along with say a HB403 down plated from 1600 to 1300 would be ok and leave 520 for the trailer load/horse

Actual weights are not used for licence categories - plated weights are used

I suppose if you don't have hills you won't have a problem :) I'm in Somerset so a bit hilly but not too bad (I used to live in Tuscany, definitely no good over there!)

Just noticed the second part of your other post (sorry!) mines 2.2l and I'm almost certain it's one of the less powerful options so they definitely go over 1.6l (for anyone interested.)

You dont need the weighbridge . You cant tow that combination with a B licence and if B+E you wont be anywhere near the car towing limit.
 
I have a diesel 2.2l xtrail, and tow on a b licence with a cheval trailer. I only have a 350kg pony and have plenty of room. Even with my trailer down plated i have enough load space to do an emergency colic run to vets with neigbours 550kg beast although he only just fitted. I live in a hilly area and have no issues. Fuel wise i do on average 1500 miles a month and spend aroynd £200 on diesel.
 
Friend had one, 99,000 miles and turbo diesel pump blah blah, she had it all fixed at great expense, then someone went into the back of her at a junction and wrote it off, she bought another and had all the same problems, when I was looking to change my Terrano I had a look under the bonnet of one, the engine looked about the size of the Terrano's battery, now Renault own Nissan, it's basically a Renault Laguna in a different body, hence turbo and pump at 99,000 miles as Laguna's were noted for it as well, also with Nissan's sneaky attitude to it's Navara's smashing conrods and pistons out the side of the engine block, and being a pain over warranty if you were a couple of miles over the service mileage, which happened to my neighbor, again noted for it, I wouldn't be looking at a Nissan period.
 
I worked out mine would take an Ifor, my 560kg cob and be right on the cusp of the limits. Manuals have bigger weight limits than automatics. Fuel consumption is ok, more than my old Honda CRV, I'd say, but that's not a scientific measurement, just how often I fill up compared to when I had the CRV.
