Just bought a new pony for my 10 year old daughter. Walk & trot are fantastic but she is experiencing problems in canter as the pony just gets faster and faster and it ends up in a battle for her to get him to stop. Does anyone have any schooling suggestings or schooling aids that may help her as it is starting to knock her confidence.

is the pony in the same saddle as you tried it in? if not, that could be the cause.
a lot of ponies go very well in a kimblewick, might be worth a try, just a bit of curb action to give her more strength when she needs it.
i'd get her to teach him to whoa on the voice from walk and from trot, that will help too.

I'd possibly get her some lessons on the new pony an instructor will show her some exercises to slow him down e.g lots of transitions, working on circles, half halts.
What bit is the pony ridden in at the moment?

I'd be tempted to leave things as they are at the moment and get some lessons then go from there.

If you are happy that tack is OK I would suggest lessons with a good instructor and in the mean time lots of transitions or maybe lunging the pony so it gets used to listening to voice commands. I know this is stating the obvious but the pony can only get stronger if it's got something to pull against.

We bought the saddle with the pony as it was made to measure for her so no problems there. She was ridden in a snaffle or double bridle for dressage and a pelham for jumping & cross country. I have kept her in the pelham for safety until my daughter gets used to her but as I say in canter she just gets stronger and stronger so there is no way she can compete in any riding club things until I can get her back into a snaffle.
