We have a new horse, a 16.2 hunter type, big lad, but he hasn't grown a proper winter coat. He is very well and has a lovely sheen to his coat, but apart from his chin, slight feather and a bit of soft wooliness around flanks.....almost a summer coat!
We have had him for a couple of months, he hasn't been ridden since April, and we haven't started anything yet as we are waiting for a saddle fitter. He has been wearing a lighter(100) weight turnout, and nothing indoors. But he is now in a medium weight, inside and out.
Apart from the fact I have to keep buying rugs I didn't think I'd need, given his general build, (described as a cob in ad) he is well and happy, if a bit playful in the field with his mate. But having worked with hunters, thoroughbreds and dressage horses for years, I have never come across this before.
Any ideas why?
