Any reccommendations? My guy is having an operation on this nose and teeth so when he comes home I would like him to be in a healthy stable environment. At the moment I am thinking of either, cardboard bedding, hemp/flax or megazorb.

:)

Paper, always always paper. Most veterinary hospitals use paper bedding. It's dust free, absorbs moisture beautifully, and most importantly makes a lovely big comfy bed.

My vets have cardboard too, so I guess is because it's good at not getting stuck in wounds, dust-free & non edible? Could u ask ur vets where they get theirs from?

I use wood pellets, (Aquamax) and although they are great, they are not 100% dust free & do get stick to things very easily!

Absolutely 100% cardboard. I have asthma and it is the only bedding, apart from paper that doesn't set it off so it must be dust free. Even Abiose and Megazorb make me wheeze. Shavings are a big nono for me as well. Never tried wood pellets but have heard they disintergrate to dust if they aren't kept damp and I don't want my horses on damp beds.

Highly recommend hemp. My mare has some lung issues fillowing pneumoniq and has to be dust free. Shes brill on this stuff. Highyl absorbant as well - ive gone from 4 bales shavings a week to one of hemp a week because it absorbs so much better

I'd definitely go the cardboard route, we used it for a while and it was lovely bedding!! We had the shredded type and it was completely dust free, very absorbent and made a lovely comfortable bed. The only reason we moved on from it was because my horse was a total bed destroyer and we got through huge amounts of it, so we had to change back to a more affordable bedding. Am seriously considering going back to it with new horse though, I do miss it!
Megazorb is great, I use it under straw to absorb the wet and it does it's job incredibly well - i wouldn't say it was noticeably dusty but I think it could be if used as a full bed and trodden down / walked around on a lot etc.
I personally didn't have much luck with wood pellets - we tried several brands and followed instructions precisely but stopped using them as we found them incredibly dusty, however much we watered them - I struggled to stay in the stables and it gave all the horses runny eyes and noses so we had to give up on that, though I know that not everyone has experienced this problem.

I would recommend either hemp or megazorb.. I have used previously both with a very poorly pony and continue to use megazorb now for both of my ponies as its slightly cheaper than hemp x

Cardboard!! I have been using Ecobed for four years and love it. My vets use it because it is virtually dust-free. It banks beautifully, is absorbent, and is easy to move and discard. Ecobed is cardboard cut into approximately 1 inch squares (some bits are larger). It can be purchased from Pearce Recycling.
