Following various posts about the dangers of riding with no hat (Katie Price the most recent) I thought you'd all enjoy the pic my OH took of me in A&E last March after a stupid riding accident. We were happily hacking down a tarmaced country lane when Sunny decided to race the mare next to him. I wasn't quick enough and - long story short - he stuck a few little bucks in. I was left hanging upside down round his neck in canter and when I couldn't hold on any longer I dropped off on to the tarmac. What I didn't realise was that my hat had been knocked off in the first couple of bucks, so I hit the tarmac head first. Air Ambulance, the works.

Moral of this story? WEAR A HAT!!!

but as your post said u were wearing a hat i used to ride without one i will admit that not now but when i was younger and i came of heaps with out a hat and never hit my head on floor i suppose I'm good at duck and roll

i agree that you should wear a hat at all times riding but maybe the moral of story should be wear a hat and make sure its fitted properly as not to fall off as well? no criticising just saying i see alot of riders where i am with to big hats on

Looks very nasty. Told someone at our yard the other day to tighten their very loose chin strap as hat served no purpose at all the way she had it. Dont like the Beagler hats for the reason that they have no chin strap. Extremely dangerous!

Gosh that looks really nasty but thank you for helping me make my point in my earlier post.
Not so long ago i read about a girl that jumped on her pony in the yard bareback and without a hat and she ended up head first into the stable wall and died instantly.

I hope you made a good and swift receovery.
Hats off to you for posting it

Thanks for posting that but I dare say you will not convert those who don't want to be converted.

I ride in a hat and would never not wear one - value my brains too much. I work in a hospital and have had several riders come in whose injuries, had they not been wearing a hat, would have been catastrophic. Their split and damaged hats most certainly saved them from very, very serious injury.

I do hope you have recovered - double chin strap for you next time, me thinks!

I would love to print that off and take it down to show a (rather vain) girl at our yard. She does wear a hat, she just doesn't fasten it up. I tried to explain that she may as well just not have it on as it would come off her head before she hit the ground but there is officially no telling teenager. Hope you recovered fully from it, I suppose it could have been far worse on tarmac.

I always ride with a hat, I have several hats at the yard, incase I forget my normal hat (which I bought for SJ but I love it now!)

I shudder when I see people riding w/o.

A girl at the yard went into a coma for 2 weeks when she came off hunting at bramham (crossing the tarmac path) and she had a hat on! She would definately not be here has she not worn a hat.

Although I think hunts insist on the use of hats?

I saw a woman riding yesterday in a hat without a chin strap on our hunt meet. Each to their own, but I wouldn't do that.

used to ride all time without hat but grew up and got wiser, untill a couple of weeks ago when i said sod it i aint wearing it horse safe enough and aint going to do anything and yes you guessed it i fell off(sod law) wasnt hurt but made me think

Ouch!

My hat saved my life when I was thrown and landed head first in the road. I have broken vertebrae, but not a smashed skull!

I see so many people riding on the roads round here with no hats, on frankly dangerous horses, because they think it looks good.

I remember your accident, but I had no idea the head injury was so bad.

Ouch indeed! Poor you. Looking at that picture must make you feel sick to the pit of your stomach. Glad you're ok now.

Owch!! That almost rivals the pictures of me after being double barreled in the face!!

I really can't see why people wouldn't want to look after their head

But sadly I very much doubt you'll convert many of them

Good call posting that, I know its not very nice but sometimes is takes a few gory pictures to make people realise the dangers.

I know the last couple of times I've come off I've clouted the back of my head, god only knows what damage I'd of done without a hat, hence buying new skull cap last week.

Do people realise how much their heads weigh and wearing a hat can also reduce the risk of a neck injury too.

My horse took a violent dislike to his new exercise sheet last winter (horse eating monster apparently, despite being well used to wearing all kinds of rugs) and shot forward as I was getting on.

I fell on to my back on the concrete yard, smacking my head hard enough to make me feel very sick and give me one hell of a headache. When I took the cover off my skull cap there was a smash in the back through the black plastic and down to the fiberglass layer - I must have hit a stone sticking out of the concrete.

It makes me feel sick to this day when I think what could have happened if I hadn't had a hat on.

Well done foor posting this BoF.
can I just ask, why did your hat come off, did you not do it up?

If this saves the head of one person, it was worth posting.

Very good post - I think that images like this should be used a bit like the images they put on packs of cigarettes warning of the dangers of not wearing a hat.

I am only a hobby rider, but at the moment I have 4 or 5 hats around the place. I keep one in the lorry at all times, one I use just for hacking around, one for competing, one for lessons (you get the idea). I always keep a lot of hats around so I can always be sure there is one to hand for all situations, and also spares if people come round to me and want to jump on anything.

The most important one is the one that lives in the lorry at all times - invaulable if I am going for a lesson and realise I haven't put my normal hat in!!

Friend of mine thought it "i don't need a hat, i'm a good rider" back in the mid '70's...she was a complete "vegetable" before her 16th birthday....and died 17 years later...

ALWAYS WEAR A HAT....

as it's not you that has to literally pick up the pieces of your life.

I'd just like to point out that none of the 'it's freedom of choice, we don't have to wear hats if we don't want to' have come out to post on this. It's a subject I feel very strongly about, having seen several nasty accidents and one death thanks to people riding with no hats. I posted a little while ago that I didn't understand why anyone would ever ride without a hat, and people absolutely jumped on me... I see no body has been so bolshy as to post the same on this thread. Perhaps the photo has done the trick?!

Good on you BoF for posting this. Although it seems you were lucky and it could have been somewhat worse! But if that is 'lucky', just imagine what 'unlucky' looks like!

I do hope you weren't too broken and have now made a full recovery! xx

Ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just bought myself a new skull cap this weekend as my old hat had been in too many falls and felt loose on my head.

Your photo just made me think it is the best £80 I've spent!!! Not worth taking a risk and putting up with what you've got.

Hope that you're not left with any ongoing issues with that injury!!
