the owner of the private yard im on told me yesterday that our farmer has ran out of hay !
he has 3 left which is one for us and the other 2 spoken for...
and thats it no hay left ....
our farmers are a bit choosy who they supply to as they have the regulars . so i dont know what were going to do .
he did mention wheat straw! hmm im not sure if i would like to feed my horses that ..
im in east yorkshire area . grass levels are running low too . my farmer said we need some rain as next year will be bad for supplies too . as nothing is growing .

is anyone else finding it hard for hay supplies ?
 
My hay guy has ran out too and won't be cutting a new crop till June. Luckily, my friend has a disused pasture for our two to go on as my hay and straw that I ordered in the in the winter is all gone as well (no thanks as well, to someone knicking a couple of bales too :( ).

To stretch out our hay through the winter, we fed good quality oat straw (my TB had hers mixed in with hay, the native only had only oat straw and then some hay when the weather was very bad) and they love it! I also fed a hay replacer like Fast Fibre too.

Yes, we have too but we ran out previous so horses out 24/7 since April 2 years ago as we had very little hay/straw last winter either. Usually summer 24/7 t/o only. Winters in. They got feed over winter but not now and they seem to be thriving.

They'll survive, look at desert horses! Fat as pancakes and live on nothing but scrub and they travel 20 miles a day.

If this drought continues, we'll have no choice.
 
Two of our local farmers "ran out" as one needed enough for the others and the other (who we have used for years and years) needed enough for his cows :). We are on the 3rd supplier who has about 500 left and is still charging £5 a bale! Hay isnt great but thats good for me as horse is a fattie so and 2 soaked sections is lasting him all night (usually has more than 1/2 a bale!) :)
 
I'm at the top end of s yorks & have been struggling for ages. I got my last 10 bales 2 weeks ago. Luckily I don't use that much, just a small haynet on a night as I have loads of grass, even in the winter the pony won't eat hay if he's turned out! Would be great if I could get it cut but there is no vehicle access! I've ended up buying some haylage in & have started to feed half & half just incase I have to end up putting him on that as I have no problem finding haylage! It's a nightmare
 
i would love to stock up on equilage but the price of that too is through the roof ....
my connemara would be ok as hes pretty plump but my tb x shes very fine build.
grass is running low were we are . and paddocks are very hard to come by in the small village were we live .
 
Never thought I'd say this fingers crossed for some rain Friday! every little helps. My farmer has his phone ringing constantly with requests for hay... He stockpiled enough to get the herd and our horses through summer & winter just, so is having to turn people down... It's a bit desperate eh?
 
your not kidding it is scary ..
and yes lol .. i didnt think i would be praying for rain ...
im away this wknd and yup forecast rain .... aw well i will be snug in my room ...
hubby and the boys they will be stuck round a pond fishing under the brollies ......
but yeah getting pretty desperate for hay ..
we have about 3 weeks to find another supplier ....
 
I have one on hay and last summer i bought him some bales off of the field which has lasted him since last autumn, now down to my last 4 bales of that, and have one large round bale of hay left for him also. Although there is a shortage, there does seem to be hay available round our area, and the price isn't too bad.

There is a huge shortage i think in our area though of big bale haylage- my haylage suppliers ran out at the end of February- normally they run out in May or June!- they weren't letting anyone stockpile either and they had promised to look after us, so that was really annoying!- with 2 big horses that need haylage and not hay, i prefer to feed big bale and not the small bales, but i've been having to get small bales delivered in on pallets from the west country at a big expense!

I'll be running out of the haylage in a week or so's time and i'd love to be able to find some large bale stuff!

If you get stuck -there are farmers/companies out there that will courier hay to you from other parts of the country although it does work out expensive, it may work out cheaper if there are other people at your yard that you could share a pallet with.

We have found some big round bales of hay for £25 a bale, it's quite nice hay too .... It should last a while - hopefully till the next lot is cut :)
 
Yeah, my hay chap ran out in jan so I had to put my two on small bagged haylage, cost me a bomb!! All the other hay people wouldn't sell to me as I wasn't a regular!! Even though not long been here,so could be!! Quite worried about this winter ahead!!
 
i know what you mean . our farmers are the same round here if were not regulars .. its pretty scary at the thought of no hay ...in winter
were all pretty much in the same boat . and what with the feeds going up in price
seems to be every time i buy its gone up .......
