So, I arrived at the yard tonight to find there was no hay left - not a single strand of it on the entire yard & none had been purchased. Yard owners nowhere to be seen, other liveries nowhere to be seen either. *sigh*

This isnt the first time its happened & I have complained about it, so I'm now contemplating getting in own hay & knocking the amount off of the livery bill every month if the yard can't bloody well provide what they're paid for.

Anyone think I'm out of order in at least expecting the YO to account for my horses lack of roughage & cover the costs I incur as a result of their complete uselessness?

Maybe I'm just still too angry about it to think straight...

What did you do? Turn your horse out? Feed a trug of chaff overnight?

I would get some haylage in sealed plastic and keep it at home / in lorry out of sight until cant sort out long term fix,

@Wingedhorse - Oooo no we couldnt turn them out, we'd be the worst liveries in the world if we dare put a horse in a field before April now :)

I got a spare wrapped haylage bale in last time it happened, so I broke that open. Good mind to knock the 6 quid off the livery bill which was pinned to my stable when I got there though to make a bloody point. Isnt like I've suffered in silence the previous times ;)

How awful, and how can someone who is running a livery business allow themselves to run out of a basic food. I am sure it makes you wonder about other aspects of the service.

What a good thing that you have a secret supply handy, I would not be able to contain myself if I was in your position I would be so mad.

I would be telling the YO that you will be handling your own hay needs from now on or your moving yards AND your knocking that off the bill

Id be raging, I honestly prefer DIY on my own or with a friend as I can organise my own stuff. Heard of this happening before on yards.

If you cant organise sonething as simple and basic as hay/hayege for your horses you shouldnt be running a livery yard

You'd think they'd look at it and think 'oh, only 3 bales left, should probably order some'... maybe they have, just not in time, but still!

I would just tell them you would prefer to order your own hay and pay less for livery if they can't organise it, and I think buying in hay when they run out then deducting it from the bill is entirely reasonable.

If it's the only thing that bothers you about the yard I would probably have a word with them to try and get it sorted before I packed my bags. It sure is a basic requirement but something easily remedied if the yard suits you otherwise :-)

This happened to us last year when on part livery. Luckily I had some haylage as the YO said I was feeding too much of her hay, even though I had cleared this issue before we even went there and was assured he could have what he needed as long as it wasn't wasted. (Same with shavings, went from one bale a week to one a fortnight) When they started asking the more amenable liveries to pay their bills early so they could buy hay and shavings in alarm bells started to ring so I found a new yard and sure enough, a few weeks after I left the YOs were asked to leave for not paying the yard rent!

Nightmare, has happened to us too. Not just yard to supply hay, but we weren't allowed to supply our own!! After the first time it happened we kept a few bales at home, unsurprisingly we have since left!
It is absolutely infuriating!!

My worst nightmare, we are so lucky and can order our own. Is there anywhere else that you can move too, if that is not poss, then I would take the amount off the bill and always have a small supply to hand. You poor thing hope things get sorted soon.

Always the passive negotiator here trying to see both sides - but quite frankly that is outrageous! I suppose they could have been let down by their supplier at the last minute but it really should not have been left this late.

A warning notice probably would have been good too!

You wouldn't be out of order knocking the price off the bill. If the yard is contracted to supply the hay then the hay has to be there for them. Whatever did the YO expect you to do with your horse!!

To be honest though if it isn't the first time it's happened i'd be looking elsewhere!!
