Left the house at 20 to 8 this morning to go to yard. It was really gloomy, cloudy & slightly drizzley. Just outside the village I thought I saw movement coming over the brow of a hill. I was looking really hard & I could see there was something coming down the hill but couldn't see what against the hedgerow - just something was moving. I was nearly on them before I could see 2 horses, riders dressed in brown! Good job I had slowed down just in case it was horses.
They must have been out for at least 10 minutes so it must have been semi darkness when they left their yard.
I did stop & tell them they should be wearing hi viz as they were hard to see. They were polite but I bet they take no notice.

I honestly don't understand why people put themselves and their horses at risk like this. Sadly they may be the people that will only learn the hard way.

I currently dont wear anything Hi Viz but only because I dont have any ... my pony has some reflective leg wraps but hes only little so they probably dont make much difference but we only hack out right in the middle of the day when its light ... i am planning to get my hands on some hi viz gear soon though now its getting dark by 4

Buy a coat that has hi viz outer or hang your hi viz with your hat-makes it impossable to forget it no matter whats going on!
There really is no excuse for not wearing it,whatever the season.

Why on earth do people risk their life and that of their horse??

IMo just because it is daylight doesn't mean people can see you, even in the middle of summer.

Ditto, I wear mine every single time we go out. What ever the time/weather/day. ALWAYS.

I love my horse to bits and at the end of the day the bloody idiots who hare around corners are going to hit my girl before me. I couldn't live with that unless I knew I had done everything to make drivers aware we were there and give us that extra few seconds that I know make all of the difference.

They are going to think there are mobile Christmas trees around from tomorrow. Our hi viz flashing tail guards and hat bands are being delivered tomorrow

I was furious the other evening. It was nearly four o clock and I was on my way to work for the evening. Was heading out of my village down the hill and just round the corner under the railway bridge was a girl from one of the SJ yards hacking out on the roads when it was nearly dark. We nearly hit her. Worst thing is she was heading away from home and obviously had only just left her yard. What sort of an absoloute moron with a death wish hacks out in near darkness with no hi viz!?!

I feel like a police woman dressed up in hi-viz but I wouldn't be without it, in fact on my xmas list is a hi-viz bomber jacket as i'm getting cold and wet in my gilet

I met someone on a dark(ish), drizzly day with no hi-viz, I could not see her and she was riding and leading, I really don't know why people do it. At first I felt silly but now I feel it is necessary.

One of my friends laughed at me with my hi-viz but I wouldn't listen to her as she rides out on the roads with no hat on

Same, but if it makes one more person slow down because they think it could be mounted police then brilliant.

No excuse.

I tell you another great thing to wear just now.

Bright pink leg warmers!!

My friend and I were riding out with a pair on each (plus high viz) and one of the local farmers stopped and said

"by jesus ladies, I could see your legs a mile away"

Poor him.......but they obviously work well AND keep your legs warm!

hehe i always ride in bright pink socks or leg warmers, even if we're inside.. my old YO hated it!! though it really annoys me when people hack out without wearing anything to make them show up, in a way it would be best they get what they deserve so they realise how silly they're being! x

Have a read of your insurance if you have any as many of them now say not insured if not wearing Hi Viz when handling or riding on the roads. I do not mind what colour people wear just please please wear some. I now even wear some when bring the horses in from the fields just to give other road users a little better chance of seeing me and my two brown horses in middy brown rugs coming along the road. One motorist stopped and thanked me as she was sure that she would not have seen us in time if I had not been wearing it.
