My youngster has been an absolute nob today:mad:Left him in the yard owners hands for the farrier. He was really scared apparently.Wouldn't stand still ,shaking like a leaf etc
It's not like they haven't been done before either
Have rearranged to meet the farrier next week and hopefully we will be able to get him done.
Now I don't have a problem picking his feet up and holding them and I am going to get a couple of the lads to do it as well but does anyone have any more tips. I would prefer not to twitch or sedate. Did think I would give him some rescue remedy but there are other homeopathic more specific for fear. Does anyone know which ones to use ?
Any advice welcome

Maybe its not the horse thats the nob here! If he is only young and had a bad experience last time, even though it wasn't obvious at the time you should be more sympathetic to his fears. He may be fine with you but why assume he is fine with strangers? I would be getting him HAPPY AND USED to other people picking his feet out whilst you are there to give him confidence.
I have a youngster too thats very worried about having his feet picked up, I had the farrier booked for monday but have had to reschedule rather than cause him anxiety.

Nope no bad experiences in the past.He has been done by the same farrier since I got him 2 years ago so it's not as if he is not familiar with him.We are fortunate that the farrier comes once a week to the yard so the boy was introduced at an early age.Have had him standing next to a horse that has been hot shod so he can get used to the noise and smell.Obviously having a bad day but I welcome your opinion and will get all and sundry to pick out his feet so he gets used to being handled by different people.

I used clicker-training to get my mare picking up her feet. The farrier of the previous owner wasn't able to trim her feet, but mine came two weeks after I bought her and no issues, so it worked like a dream. Only drawback was when I first tried to put boots on - legs up like pistons, lol! So, I put the leg-up on cue, so that she only lifts when I say "HUPP!!"

Them standing next a horse being shod is quite far removed from doing it themselves. Chloe will happily stand sniffing Henry's bum when I apply flyspray, but if ANY of it lands on her, she goes into orbit.

My youngster stands like a dream for a bowl of chaff!!!! ....However, he doesnt appear to be scared of *anything*......

Just wondering if your chap has 'tweaked' himself in the field and is a bit sore and tight in his muscles. We rotate our youngsters legs (start from fetlock and work our way up to shoulder) to help loosen his muscles around his chest and down his legs, as when the farrier comes to trim, when working with a horse, he will pull the leg up and out, which for some horses, can be uncomfortable.

I do try to put his legs where the farrier would and he is not to bad. I don't have a problem picking his feet up.For some reason on this day he was having none of it and the farrier was the most evil man in the land !
So I will try your exercises to see if it makes any difference - well it won't do any harm anyway
Thanks
