No Microchip?

Evening all

I am hoping to pick some more experienced brains.............
I booked a pony to be vetted this morning, only to be told the pony has no Microchip (Pony aged 14 ) therefore could not be vetted.
The pony is now being chipped on Friday.

This leads me to a couple of thoughts?

Are unchipped equines a common thing?
How long does it take to register a microchip?
And how long after microchipping can the vetting take place?

Hopefully the vet will clear this up in the morning, but I'm not one to wait, so thought I might get some clarity here.

Many thanks

When our foals are microchipped we usually get an email from the chip registering company the next day
I would expect there are plenty not chipped
Plus the chips can migrate so ensure vet has covered a large area to check, not just the neck

Does it have a passport? One of mine needing chipping recently tp comply with the newish legislation, she was 17yrs, so wasn't needed then to get a passport. If there is a passport with matching markings i wouldn't be too concerned, especially as the owner seems to be sorting it.

Micro chipping for horses was fairly unusual for horses when the 14 year olds were born i.e. 2007, freeze branding being so much more visible.
What it's lack might tell you is that it is likely that the horse has been with an owner for a long time and thus not needed to be vetted.
Hope things go well.

This would never be a good reason not to have a pre purchase vetting.

Honest owners don't always know that there's anything wrong with their horses and dishonest ones sell, even after a long ownership, because they know that there is!

Chips can fail and migrate. I don't think this is a reason not to do a pre purchase vetting on a pony.

If it was the owner who cancelled the vetting be very wary.

My pony didn't have a microchip until last year she is 25 I only had her chipped as it was a legal requirement I think my highland foal was the first of the compulsory ones she was 12 this year

Yes had my old horse microchipped when the law came in to be legal but not unusual for an older horse not to chipped - racehorses have been since 1999 but other horses it only became a legal requirement fairly recently. The only time I have had a microchip checked on a horse was with my RoR when he has done a racecourse parade and was going into racecourse stables. I was surprised at the number of horses out competing who didn't have flu vaccinations and were rapidly vaccinated when passports starting getting checked so imagine there are lots not chipped.

I’d say there are plenty of horses out there without a microchip, in fact now I come to think of it I’ve no idea if mine has one or not will have to go check her passport ? if she does is not registered in my name ?‍♀️
The whole passport/microchip enforcement is pretty much non existent so I can see why some don’t have them. Not sure why you’d cancel a vetting because there was no microchip.

i only did my oldies when the deadline came around because they are owned by a charity and i had to send the details in to them. they won't leave their field again until they are pts so it didn't seem like a massive priority. If you weren't paying attention on SM it could easily by-pass you that it was a requirement to chip horses that were previously exempt through their age so i can imagine a fair few out there without chips.
i am also not clear why that meant the vetting couldn't go ahead but it's pretty quick to get chips registered once they are in.
