Had vet out twice to pony first time she said she suspected laminitis so pain relief and box rest, two days later pony unwilling to put back hoof to the ground hoof really hot so I suspected an abscess, I put a poultice on and called the vet who came out again and dug around hoof but couldn't find anything but said to carry on Poulticing and box rest but NO pain relief it is not given for abscesses now. I no it is years since I have had a pony with an abscess but this seems cruel to me pain relief was always given.

If you give an anti inflammatory pain reliever then it can suppress the abscess from making its way out. That prolongs the problem which is even more cruel. It's a case of cruel to be kind I'm afraid. You can help it by softening the foot with hot tubing in a solution of washing soda.

Hi, I've been watching this with interest as mine is on a sachet of bute a day for arthritis.
Is there an alternative pain relief should a horse who is on maintenance bute/danillon suffer an abscess?

Mine is on 1 a day so I just keep him on that and up if needed if anything happens, mine had an abscess erupt on boxing day, had vet next day and treated as you would and abscess farrier coming tomorrow hopefully have shoe back on to go out, vet said to give bute/anti-inflammatory, as he's on it anyway I just gave same dose

That might depend how you define medicines. Anything based on Devil's Claw is banned in competition. Boswellia is a proven anti inflammatory, not yet banned but still every bit as much a medicine as aspirin, which also had a natural source originally.
