I'm looking at buying a pony, he's only 2 but doesn't have a passport, has never had one. I completely trust the seller and am having him on loan first and am getting the vet out to do id sheet and chip him as soon as i get him, am I ok to then apply for a passport? Am V V confused by whole passport business!

Technically a horse should have a passport or you are at risk of being fined. However when i got my horse, who was being neglected we got him with only a completed passport application form. You really need to have a application ready to send before taking him, at the very least. You will also need to choose who will be the owner on the passport as you are only loaning him.
The horse passport agency under frequent question has a lot of information about passports.

Just to add i am no expert on horse passports this is just what i found when i was getting my horse!

I *think* that it is illegal to sell a horse without a passport, but not illegal to buy one without one.
So, I *think* so long as you got him passported as soon as you bought him it would be fine.
However it is illegal to travel a horse without its passport, so I think you would have to apply for the passport after you bought the horse but before you moved them to your yard, in order to cover your back.
However, if you are planning to loan the horse at a yard other than at the current owners yard, the current owner would have to apply for a passport before you moved them, or you would be breaking the law, travelling an unpassported horse.
Confusing stuff!
I hope this helps.

Surely the seller should sort it out before you complete the sale? I would certainly ask for that, as otherwise you will foot the bill, plus they shouldn't be selling the horse without one anyhow..

Ditto, ditto, ditto!!! It is ILLEGAL to sell a horse without a passport. It is ILLEGAL o travel a horse without a passport. How can you 'trust' a seller who is happy to break the law?? And - buying horses - the golden rule is never trust ANYONE totally!

Have spoken to seller again, told her my concerns, she's going to sort out chip and passport before I buy him, so panic over, I'm just waiting til it comes to get him

I have said I can't get transport til its there with him, I was just excited and keen to get him home but its not worth a 5k fine just to have him a few weeks early!! Just wasn't sure what the rules were, thanku all for your help

You realise that you could have had the £5000 fine travelling a horse with no passport and the police are stopping horseboxes and checking, also your vet wouldn't be able to treat said pony if it came ill.

1. It is actually illegal to loan/sell a pony without a passport.

2. He will need one for you to transport him.

3. How can you trust the ownr completely when they are breaking/flouting the law.

4. And dont be surprised that they take him back off loan once he's passported and chipped.

When my friend sells his youngsters he applies for the passport and gets them microchipped in the name of the person who has bought them. This saves the purchaser the expense of having the passport changed. So on the one hand, technically, he is selling without a passport but on the other hand he isn't.

Yeah thats common practice for those selling youngstock or for dealers digger123.
I bought a pony on Monday from a dealer, its passport wasn't applied for until I had bought it, but it was really quick, I got the passport today.

Its good the way it works, the buyer gets to choose the name on the passport.
