I am reading my way through the pinned post already, but until I have the upfront cash for a battery etc I was thinking solar powered lights?

Anyone have any good ideas to light up 2 stables?

Solar power still requires some sort of storage via battery for the power. The problem you will have is that the time you most need the lights, winter, is also the least productive for solar power.

I have a battery that would charge a solar panel as we used it at the yard before the cows broke out and chewed the wires of it.

In November, we installed a Geo 5 solar lighting kit (purchased from the solar centre online). It provides light for 10 LED lights. Our building is approx 30 x 45 feet and it lights it up well. The panel itself is small but even on dull days, provides enough power to trickle charge an old truck battery. Flicking a switch and having light is still a bit of a novelty after two winters of using head torches! Would definitely recommend. Smaller kits are available.
