so, i found out this week tgat my beautiful mare off 11 years has damage to ligaments in both back legs. she will never recover, only get worse over time. heartbroken doesnt come close, dont know how long it will be before the pain is too much. shes ok at the mo, just got get bute levels sorted, and i have a fab vet who i know will tell me when enoughs enough if i become blinkered to it.
looking back, would i have changed anything? not a second. she has given me the best 11 years i could imagne. yes i could have wrapped her in cotton wool to save this day from coming, but we lived for the moment and loved evey second! she has always been there for me, and we have had some rubbish times to get through but always came out smiling.
to everyone, love every second you have with your best friend, as who knows what tomorrow may bring, me and annie never did make it to the beach, which i always promised her, but next time we will annie, i promise xx
 
Are you sure that there is nothing that can be done. If it's suspensories, the outlook isn't brilliant, but there are treatments that can help manage them. My horse has just finished a course of shockwave, and a rescan revealed that the one with newer damage looked a lot better than it did when first scanned. He's sound, but stiff, and will now be field rested til January, when he will be rescanned, have another course of shockwave, and probably some joint injections too.
He'll never be completely healed, but the vet reckons he will be sound enough to hack, and live a comfortable, semi retired life. He's 15, an ex PSG dressage horse, and a complete star, who owes nobody anything. It's expensive, but worth it to see him comfortable!
 
thankyou for your lovely messages, auslander, we looked at treatment but she is an old lady now (vet thinks over 25) and dont want to.put her through any more stresd. she damaged the ligaments in 1 leg about 8 years ago, and it took a lot of box rest and treatment to get her sound. if she was younger i would do all i could to get them right, but her age and how stressed she gets has made the decision for me this time round. i would do all i could if the benefits outweighed the negatives but i know this time it wont. the vet has said she may be fine on a bute a day for a few years, or in 6 months she may have reached that point, just dont know how fast ir slow it will be :(

very wise words xxx do you know what happened to cause the injuries to her ligaments?
 
seems to be a combination if old injuries, age and conformation all creeping up on us. its not cone on suddenly, has been steadily getting more noticeable, she is not lame as such, just stiff and poor movement through her back legs. the elastic is not as good as it was through the ligaments, causing everything to drop and put strain through the legs x

Oh bless her - didn't realise she was an old girl! We're in the same boat really - I know Alf won't stay sound forever - he has DJD in his hocks and stifles too. I'm going to look on every year that he's pain free and happy as a gift, and make sure I do right by him when the time comes.
 
So sorry to hear that. I have a 23yr old who's sound & fit, but having damaged her suspensories & annulars at 18, I wouldn't put her through extensive treatment if it happened again. But if finances allow, maybe have a chat with the vet about shockwave & cartrophen. Neither is invasive & can be done at home. Not saying they will cure it, but could be an option to keep her comfortable for longer. Either way, I really feel for you being in this situation x
