My mare has had a bad cough for nearly two weeks. Vet came after 2 days and put her on Ventip. straight away. She did not have a temp and there has been no mucus. I also took her off straw and onto shavings.

After a week i thought she was getting better, cough had almost gone and she was as alert and happy as normal. I rode her just in walk tonight for the first time tonight and the wheezing and coughing came back terribly. The night before on the lunge she had been fine. I am booking her in monday to be scoped but am obviously really worried now. The Ventip. has not made a difference and it sounds like from the pressure with the saddle she still has some inflammation on the lungs :( HAs anyone experinced anything similar?? many thx x

I'm in no way 'clued up' about things like this but in my experience vets tend to treat with a course of antibiotics first, and if these don't clear it up look in to other others. 5 sachets of antibiotics cleared my mare's really bad cough up. Since then a few horses have got coughs and antibiotics have sorted that out. Although obviously won't treat everything.

Don't be worried about the scope, its very routine and the best way to find out what is going on. Hope you find nothing major and something that can be treated easily :)
