Orkan threw a shoe on Thurs night (hooning around the field in mud sigh) He is just coming back into work slowly as he has/had (not sure until we get to the trot work next week) a soft tissue back injury.

As such, he has to be walked every other day for 20 -30 mins. Would it be awful to ride him round the sandschool today to continue his back rehab or should I wait till Monday when the farrier is coming out....

My farrier always says it's ok to ride without a shoe (I only have fronts).

Previous horse, I'd only ride if back shoe lost as you'd swear he'd lost a leg if he'd lost a front shoe.

If the foot has not broken up and hes sound on a smooth surface then I would ride! You'll only be walking on soft sand anyway, it will be fine! Think of those horses that continue round badminton having lost a shoe!

sorry I put loads of ! in my text lol.. didnt mean to put quite as many

Normally i would say yes its fine. And in a sand school where it wont make a difference its also fine

But the fact that yoru horse has a back injury where being unlevel could make this recovery slower i would show a bit more caution. Dont do anything on a hard or flat surface if you can avoid it.

Ordinarily I do work mine if she has lost a shoe - but only on bark, and only if it was pulled off doing less strenuous work - i.e it didn't come off out hunting and continue for the rest of the day.

Last time (she barely ever looses shoes) she pulled one half off in the school (8.30pm, pissing down rain, theres me removing it!), then the farrier put it back on the next evening, when she pulled it off again 2 days later. He came out same day because she WOULD go lame...is what she does!
