No Signal do you still go out??

I always take a mobile now, but spent my whole childhood hacking alone or with similar aged young friends without, as they were'nt around, and no one got the jitters then!

If it was me, I would take it, just because I have it and it's convienient, but if there was no signal, I wouldn't worry and I don't think that should be a reason to dictate what you do.

As kids I can remember a couple of time's when we had to walk to the nearest village and knock on someone's door to use their phone. The worst time was when I broke my collar bone, I was hacking alone and being stupid - trying to jump my pony over a ditch in a field next to a road, but I was spotted by some car drivers very quickly and they organised my ambulance. You'll be pleased to know I have grown up and am quite sensible now!

Whilst there may be no signal from your provider, if you make a 112 or 999 call the phone should relay through all providers until it finds a signal.

Yes - so in some areas there will be no signal from any phone network, so no ability to make a 999/112 call.

Mobile reception is patchy in my area, but I still hack. Usually I find that if I walk a few hundred yards down the road reception comes back.

999/112 calls do not relay on normal mobile networks if they are not available. They will tag onto police networks or anything else available.

Litrelly the only places a mobile can't make a 999/112 call is on top of a mountain or halfway out to sea.

It's a pretty foolproof system.

Exercising alone with a mobile 'phone is very sensible, especially if sitting on a youngster. However, going back 50-odd years, there were none - and we oldies still survived.

Imbeciles with mobile 'phones - who just have to text or speak to their friends after every fence or whilst hounds have checked - drive me demented.

The ONLY reasons to use a mobile 'phone in the hunting field is to dial 999 - or for a child to tell mother that they will be in a certain place at a certain time at the end of the day.
With The R&WH we always ensure that the children hack home with us anyway and if a child does not have a mobile, then someone will always ring mother on their behalf.

I do think I could have died if I couldn't have made contact pretty soon after my accident; I was in a bad way and it was late December - not a good time to be lying on a fen road in the middle of nowhere with your face kicked open!

PS glad you made a full recovery....

RE.. the mobile...I always have mine with me, but usually its more hassle...I get OH saying...why did it take you so long to answer? And I'm like....cos I was going full belt accross the field..

Or....more likely I have fished it out of my pocket, dropped it in the grass and have been rummaging around looking for it

Not forgetting that I fell off my horse in an indoor school and broke my leg and still nobody knew I was there!! The yard was only a little way away too. In the end I had to crawl to the side and bang on the wall before anyone heard me.
I never thought of taking my phone in the school before that happened!

funnily enough there was life before the mobile phone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! someone somewhere will bail you out!

Agree with this. I always carry my phone and I have made sure I'm with the best provider but when fate hits you can be anywhere and quite possibly not be able to phone for help anyway. About 30 yrs ago I fell off on top of a remote moor (about 5 miles from the yard) and my pony stood on me. A farmer found me and helped me back onto horse so he could lead me to the farm where he could use the telephone to get help. I couldn't walk for a week and I had a dent for years but it was all fine in the end..

QR: Please don't rely on being able to make a 999/112 call from a phone where there is no signal. It simply doesn't always work.

Here there is no mobile signal from any network - although we do pick up Orange in places.

During a Health and Safety overhaul at the shoot recently we looked into the 112 that supposedly bounces off satellite and found that it didn't work at all.

We have also had extensive talks with the Police about this and they also struggle to get radio or mobile connection in some places - even though lots of new masts have been put up for the Police Airwave network. Due to the topography of our ground it is impossible for them to be provided with blanket coverage in this area.

Interestingly, I noticed on my phone just the other day that whereas it usually displays "No Network", the other day it said "Emergency Only"!

LOL- So, no, I don't bother carrying a phone out hacking!
