Just read in the Sunday Telegraph that the BBC has pulled out of televising Crufts this year due to the pedigree dog programme of last year.

Does anyone know if any other TV companies have jumped in or will there be no coverage of Crufts at all this year?

What an awful shame if not

As far as I know there is no TV coverage at all - but there are going to be a substantial number of animal rights protestors present

Friday is Toy day, so I am hoping Mum hires a bodyguard of some kind (she is 70 next month

Oh no - what an awful shambles.

I was thinking that Horse and Country TV should have covered it - it would have done wonders for their ratings.

ridiculous isn't it. the biggest, most famous dog show in the world and not even on tv. Not that the coverage was any good anyway. Hope your Mum does well acolyte.

Thanks for that chesnuttymare

Although she never does that well at Crufts, more hope at the CKCS CH Show next weekend I believe

The BBC wanted to impose ridiculous conditions, like not allowing "at risk" breeds to appear in the big ring. THe breeds they consider at risk include some of the most popular, eg. CKCS and GSDs so the Kennel Club decided they wouldn't agree. I think there is going to be web coverage on the Crufts website, not sure what form it will take. I am going for the first time in ages this year, just as a spectator, courtesy of daughter as a load of free tickets were offered to the vet students. I think the KC are trying to keep the next generation of vets sweet

well, you never know, depends on the judge. Last year, the judge was just the right one for my bitch but she had to have double cruciate surgery so we didn't go. typical.

Just wondering - why did she need both cruciates done ?

Murphys minder, my uni is one being offered tickes for it, its really fun to go to, just make sure you check the timetable of everything and get yourself orientated. Me and my friend got LOOOOSSST for baout 1hr when we arrived! hehe but it was SUCH good fun it didnt really matter.

A number of my lecturers are competing in it this year. One of my personal tutors has her Field Spaniel in it on saturday, so our uni is goign to chear her on!!! its a beautiful dog (unforutnatly most crufts competitors are!)

Lucy, I'm MM's daughter, I'm assuming you're at Liverpool too?! I agree about the getting lost thing, me and my friends spent most of last year wandering around trying to find various stands.

Oh, and what lecturers are competing? I'm going on saturday too as a friend of mine has both a cocker and springer entered, so I said I'd go and cheer her on!

M88, I think Lucy-NOTTINGHAM might just be at Nottingham uni

Lucy, I know wht you mean about getting yourself orientated. I am quite thankful to be going without a dog tbh as I think Crufts is an awful show for dogs

I have been for both breed showing and agility, but in those days hardly saw anything of the show as didn't like leaving the dogs on their benches. NEC isn't quite so bad, used to be awful when it was in London, great fun travelling on the tube with 2 "country " German Shepherds.

My Mum is going on Friday with the IWS to stand in the Discover Dogs bit all day.
So if anyone sees a Women and her Dog that look identical, and fancies a good natter, go tell her how lovely her dog is

(Warning - She can talk the hind legs of a donkey!)

To be honest I only ever watched for a fleeting glimpse of a GSD, and while I didn't get to see Zamp (and was a bit puzzled as to what he was even doing there...but hey ho) I was a bit overcome when Loretta from Shotaan took the group a few years ago.
I do also enjoy the agility.

Animal rights protestors, eh Acolyte? Could be fun if any of the German dogs feel the need to get a bit of Schutzhund practise in....only joking. Honest.

I think the GSDs should be encouraged to take out any protestors who get in the way

I actually rang my mum tonight after I had thought about this at work today, and asked her to make sure she walked in with someone else.... then I got told off for treating her as a little old lady

She really is anything but

MM - it must be an exhibitor thing, Mum is always too busy chatting/being accosted by random people who ask her stuff/watching the CKCS judging to ever see any of the rest of the show
grin.gif
A bit like me at Badminton she arrives early, goes to the trade stands she needs to get stuff from very first thing, then sits at her bench/by the ring for the rest of the day

Ye, nottingham here, sorry M88....... so I am not sure you will know my 2 lecturers! But one has a beautiful chocolate brown field spaniel called Barnaby, so if you see her...... CHEER! hehe This is the first time she has been showing him so was extatic she got into crufts!!

Ahhh let the GSDs do their job....... couple of free animal rights protestor chew toys never did anyone any harm! hehe (joking)

I am all for getting breeds to be "healthier" with "fewer breed defects" but if people don't get to view this show of the breed variations etc then the idea of the big dog shows of demonstrating different positive aspects of different breeds is completely shot down by focussing souly on the bad points!!!

Hope everyone going enjoys themselves!

H-H, having seen who the GSD judge is I don't think there will be too many German dogs there

One reason why I am going on gundog day not working, thought it might be bad for my blood pressure

How ridiculous. Not a fan of these new fangled dogs tbh, but no coverage? Not impressed. May just have to go along myself
grin.gif

think this will be the last year i do crufts am exhibiting but they have bu**ered our lovley breed up with the docking laws we now have tails bigger than the bl**dy dog and i for one will not continue to show

What breed do you have yeeharider? I have to admit it has taken me a while to get used to some of the breeds with tails but for the most part I prefer them, can't get used to Rotties with tails though, or other similar build breeds.
Crufts should be interesting because a lot of the breed standards have changed, in some cases quite radically, yet the dogs being shown will have qualified under the old standard , wonder how the judges will deal with that one
