Hi all
have just moved to a new yard (our own) and there is no electric or water. Now the no electric is fine but how does everyone cope with no water come summer? At the mo we have a collection system from the guttering for water but what happens when we have no rain? Is water storable or does it go off?

Any ideas welcome!

Thanks all!

Water off roofs will store to some extent, but better not in a light container as sunlight encourages alga.
You could try adding a small amount of chlorine, but of course too much and it will taint.
Certainly flush out with bleach solution of you see any algal growth.
Taking your water from the mains supply means it will be chlorinated and will keep longest.

Bowser probably the easiest, with collected water to make it last longer. Are there any ditches/drains in the winter? Our field drain is invaluable when everything freezes in winter.

My computer skills are rubbish I have tried to copy and paste a picture of one we had in the fields for the cattle last year.

It is a huge white plastic tank with a cage around it, on 2 wheels and with a tap. I just put a trough under the tap and filled it daily.

Holz that's the thing we have now, the white box that collects off the roof. Sadly no ditches or anything else guys, grazing is lovely and flat. I've been told can get some device that keeps water moving and mixes it so stores for longer. Does anyone know of these such wizardry?

Where is your land? Is it close to fields that have water? May be able to run a pipe from another field, or ask water board to fit you up with water but it will cost a bit :p

Any man holes, are you off a main road or lane? If so you could get a stand pipe, you will be charged for water. Think it was about £550 a year but most of that was deposit! Water piping etc is hassle, expensive and paperwork but great when done!

A black 1000 litre IBC collecting rainwater off a roof 20 x 10 roof per horse, plus 2 x 20-25 litre containers to fill and bring to the yard by car to use when pipes frozen or drought. I collect rainwater at home too so my neds drink rainwater all year round.
