This is my first winter at my yard and because of this sudden cold weather we have had no water today, yesterday we managed to unfreeze one of our taps.
How do you cope with no water at your yard? Stupid question but how can you transport it from home? I've got to go to the yard before work tomorrow morning & will need to take some with me but not sure how, as will need quite a bit to fill their water buckets in their stables as well as the field trough (its not that big but still need quite a bit)
Thanks

I have just taken a 25 litre can of hot water from my unfrozen kitchen tap down to the field as its solid outside/The outside tap is frozen too

We've got no water atm up the field, and the water trough has none left in it. We've been lugging it up from home in one of those water barrel things, about the size of 2/3 buckets and rolling it op on one of those trolley things, a complete pain in the ass but it's the only way we get water.
We also take a bottle of hot water which we put some I'm their feed which warms them up and also gives them fluid, we put the rest in the water buckets to defrost them a bit :)

I make sure water is turned off at mains before leaving the yard - this consists of leaving yard tap running into a bucket, then going into manhole to turn off water. Then turning off tap - ensures pipe is empty along the length from mains to tap. Cover yard tap with old piece of gamgee or similar & then a plastic bag to keep dry/insulate.
This usually works in temps down to -8 - 10

Otherwise use the following when you have been an idiot & not done the turning off at mains (like I didn't do the other night!)

1. Take camping gaz burner to try to unfreeze tap.
2. Take flask of boiling water to try to unfreeze tap.
3. Have caravan 45 litre water-roll & filling hose to fill from kitchen tap & cart in car, as fills enough for 2 overnight.....
4. Use any other (clean & flushed through) water containers you can lay your hands on.
5. Make sure field tanks are kept full - you can dip into those after breaking the ice, if you need to for 1 day.
6. NEVER lob out any dirty water till you know you have got fresh - grubby water is better than no water.

Good luck :)

and if you dont have a water container? :P

You have to beg, borrow or buy one! They're an item that everyone should have for emergencies really, and are great for taking water to shows etc.

Camping shops will be your best bet.. The ones that roll are easiest to handle.

Otherwise ask fellow liveries if someone has a spare one.

Could you ask YO to fill a bucket in their house (ok if there are only a few of you, not if loads!)

This year due to illness I am not allowed to drive. Grr.

I have a 25ltr container fill it up at home and ........oh the shame ......one of those tartan shopping tolleys on wheels. Works a treat. Can get it on and off the bus with no problem and take it right to the trough. Brilliant if only it weren't so embarrassing.

I have used it for transporting a leisure battery to the field as well. Far too heavy for me to carry.

Luckily it's usually dark on my way to the yard so no one sees me apart from the bus driver and my fellow passengers. If only it were still dark on the way home.
