The guy at the yard hasnt been up to see his horses in a few days, they have had no water all day. How long can horses survive without water?

2-3 days - 4 max?

I know it's his problem and noone elses and it's hard to interfere so forgive me but why the HELL doesn't SOMEONE give them some water?

No idea, but why won't someone else put some water in? I know you shouldn't have to, but if it was me, I couldn't leave a horse knowingly without water.

I gave them water but im not always in that shed. I just went in to lift one of my rugs that i left in the loft and i looked in with them.

The only other ones in that shed are YOs daughter and gf and they said its not their responsibility. They give them a small feed dish to do a shetland and small pony, they end up knocking it over as they fight (2 stallions)

Having a horse who is now dehydrated slightly, I cannot emphasise how important it is to have water at all times... if this owner is not giving his horses water, please please someone else put some in and then tackle him when he gets to the yard (or get the YO to tackle him).

What have they been doing about feed?

They are up about twice a week and they are on DIY livery. They have hay there for them and i threw some in to them but they started shouting abuse at me that i nicked his hay!

2 stallions kept together in a shed? Seriously?

So, I take it they're not outside? What about hay? I'm sorry, but ultimately the YO IS responsible for horses on her premises. She absolutely cannot simply state "they're not my horses" if they were to die from dehydration or starvation whilst boarding with her.

She has a duty of care to animals placed on her land. I am quite disgusted that anyone would have that attitude towards the animals. Afterall, it's hardly their fault that their owner hasn't been up for two days.

What's his reason for not coming up to the yard? Has he been contacted at all?

Christmascob - sorry, hope I didn't come across as rude. You have clearly been trying to help these horses.

Regardless of what YO says, I would echo many of the other comments here and just go and give them some water tomorrow.

Lack of water is a welfare issue and IMHO cruel.

Told YO that i filled the water and he said he will text him as i dont have his number. They are standing in their own filth, i feed them when i can but they say im trying to poison his horses!!

This is the guy that drove the quad into our jeep causing £300 of damage and refused to pay us.

It honestly amazes me as to why some people keep horses. This guy sounds like he is bad news. I would be tempted to talk to the ILPH but he sounds like the type who could turn nasty.

You can't seem to win with some people but at least you are looking out for poor ponios.

I gave them water today, i put one of my large water buckets in. I know i wont get thanks for it but i will not see any horse being badly done to.

YO doesnt care, aslong as he gets his livery money. My worry is that im moving to my own yard at the start of January and who will give them water then?

Gave them my own hay tonight so im not accused of nicking. I got at YO tonight and he said he would have a word with him, but ive got at him before and nothing has changed. This has been going on for months. Ive phoned to report it but they said if the horses have food and water then they cant do anything. Tried to tell them that its me giving them water and food.

I would be contacting welfare I'm afraid. Keep it anonymous though. I would trust no-one. You are getting off the yard soon aren't you? Who will look out for them when you have gone? They deserve better I'm sure.

Yes its two stallions in together, they are covered in cuts from fighting, they are always kicking each other. Its because he doesnt want to pay for 2 stables.

I bought storage boxes but are plastic, last time i gave them his hay, one of the boxes was smashed with my spare stirrup iron and 2 wormers taken.

He wont listen to anyone, if they try and advise him then he blows up. I know he hits his horses, i was petting them today and i felt like crying. Can feel their spine, hips are pronounced, only thing hiding it is the furry coat. I feel useless about the whole thing, their eyes are very glazed, coats are dull and they stand in the stable with their heads hanging. Only time they perk up is when they get food and thats to fight for it.

Seeing as you are leaving quite soon, please, as soon as you do, get on to the RSPCA or ILPH and report the situation and your concerns, and don't take no for an answer. Two stallions together? No water? Standing in their own filth? Totally unacceptable conditions, please do it for these animals, if you don't nobody else will.

In that case I would call the ILPH/RSPCA and get someone to come out (exaggerate if you have to). These horses need help and it is beyond what you can do for them day to day.

Good luck Xx

How big is the barn they are sharing? Are they breeding stallions? What on earth does he have them for?

If you are only up a couple of times a week, do you have your horses on part livery - and are you sure he doesn't aswell?

ETS; sorry I re-read and you aren't in the same barn area as them. Well I'd tell YO that it is ALSO his responsibility to make sure these horses are cared for.

Ive phoned several times, they said that if i stop feeding them etc then they can do something, as owner could say hes doing it.

Hes openly admitted that he doesnt want his horses, hes advertised them for £500 each.

Do whatever you think is necessary for their welfare. If their are consequences, you will have about every person on this forum standing behind you (for what that's worth!).

Ive been in your position before. The owners of 6 horses (that they bought in the space of 6months) Didnt go to the farm for 6 days!!! Me and a few other liveries and the YO's gave them hay and water and mucked them out. The poo and wee was stuck to the stable floor!! Luckily, they sold them all now as they said 'they couldnt be bothered with them'

No he doesnt breed them, i was at an auction one night and i rescued a wee pony, he seen me leave with it and so went and bought them as he didnt want to leave being the only one that didnt buy a horse!!

Hes unemployed and his gf works pt. We are both on DIY, i am up at the yard twice daily. Most days im there from 9am until 5-6pm. For months these horses have not left the stable they are in.

When he does come up he chucks a slice of hay in and goes again.

I'm amazed the YO is allowing horses to be kept like this. Following a change in the law about causing unecessary suffering he could even be commiting an offence by doing nothing maybe? Sounds like time for a call to the ILPH to me

Well he sounds like an idiot. But the YO sounds like an ignorant person too, which is why he would be my first port of call - put the frighteners on YO.

i agree please report him, he sounds like a cruel ba*****d, those poor horses, if you are leaving soon, i would really worry for their lives as you seem to be doing a fair bit to help these poor horses

I couldnt care less what he does if i report them, at the end of the day YO daughter is bringing friends to the yard and they have to pass that stable to get to her horse.

I should have worded my original post better, im worried that once im gone that no one will feed these horses. They are very sweet wee things and i really feel for them. They are still quite young, think they are 4 and 5 years old. They havent seen a farrier in 6 months, i gave them wormers a while back saying 'I bought too much'. I gave them rugs that i said that the foals had grown out of.

Ive offered to let the horses out into the arena to run about, said i get bored when ive nothing to do at the stables, ok thats bull as ive always something to do. They havent been outside in ages.

Murder is against the law, but people still do it...

Ive tried to frighten the YO, said if someone reports the owner then he will be in trouble too for allowing it to happen. Didnt make a difference.

Im going to call the USPCA (im in northern ireland) until they come out, only thing im worried about is that he would take it out on my horses. Hes known to punch a horse before.

I cant wait to leave, friends say i should just forget about it when i leave but i cant. YO says not everyone is lovey dovey around their horses like me, thats not what im looking for.

I would post a pic of the stable on here but im sure i wouldnt be allowed

Sounds like you're in the yard from hell and the sooner you get out the better.

I thought the new law (does it they apply in N.Ireland?) was meant to mean that welfare organisations could take action sooner without having to tell those with good intentions not to feed the horses/ponies so that they can secure a prosecution.

I knew a horse locally that we were told not to feed due to this a few years back. Luckily it did eventually get taken into the care of a horse welfare group, but not before it looked like it had come out of Belsen.

I've never heard that any charity advised not to water though, I imagine the risk of death by dehydration is too high.
