So my 5 and a half year old thoroughbred has been holding her weight well so far but for a short while shes looked really quite scrawny and an odd shape, so I decided to measure her and low and behold she's decided to shoot up about an inch and a half! So she's now officially full up 16.3, anybody else experienced any late ish growth spurts with their horses before? I wonder if she'll grow anymore?!

Tbs are late maturers so I wouldn't be giving them a definate height until they are 7-8yo.

We have one lad in the yard who I swear was 14.2hh when he came as an entire 3yo in March - he is now just a smidgen over 15hh :D

Yes, bought ISH gelding aged 4 and 16.2hh. Nothing happened for several years (I did measure him several times) so I was happy I had a 16.2 horse.

A friend commented - when he was 8 - that he was looking awfully big, so we got out the measuring stick and... 17hh.

I think I just got used to him being large (I think of him as my big pony :o) and didn't notice.

Yes I didn't notice either until another girl at the yard said how big she looked, she used to be able to see over her withers now she can't see over unless on tippy toes! Strange how they change shape so much when having a little growth spurt! :)

I have a 5 year old cob x tb. She was 15.3hh last October now measures 16.2hh! By the sound of these posts she may well go up again!

bought Taz at 15.3hh 3 years old... grew to 16.2hh by 6 then stopped for about a year so we thought he had stopped growing and then between 8 and 9 he grew to 17.2hh :)

Oooh, I bought my boy (an Irish Draft x Cleveland Bay) as a rising 5 year old in February this year standing 18hh. Measured him in July after his fifth birthday at the end of June at 18.2 1/2hh. Measured again in October at 18.3hh. Told by farrier and also his vet that he is still growing (as god forbid he is bum high again). They think he'll make 19-19.1hh or thereabouts unless I put a brick on his back.
Still has lots of filling out to do too, so I'm more than a bit afraid of what his end height will be.
My last late horse was a pure bred TB that that was 17.1hh when I got him as a 6 year old. 18 months later we had him measured again and he was 17.3hh. I was always under the assumption that TB's matured around 4-5 years of age. How wrong I was.
I really do believe that once horses are given lots of care, attention, feed and supplements then they do tend to shoot up an inch or two (even though they have been advised by vets that they won't grown any higher).

Yeah, I do wonder. My girl was very skinny and poor when I got her in march, and as far as I know she had been in poor condition for a fair while, so it does make me wonder if it stunted her growth previously, and she has some serious filling out to... A guess by these posts she may have a couple of inches left in her.

oh hells bells I dont want 16.2 Im only 5ft 2 I bought id x warmblood passported at 15 2 hes definitely 16h + already havent backed him properly yet due to injuries . My tb was over 16 h but different type of horse so height didnt bother me plus I was riding him as 4 yr old.:(
