Update: I was able to remove the old ply (see below for the state of it!) and measure the original top layer as a template. Plywood cut to size by a very helpful local independent timber merchant, which saved me the pain of trying to cut it square with a hand saw.
Cost £66, inluding a second piece to replace the door itself. Marine ply, so should last. Could have used normal ply, but I don't intend doing it again.

It fits, after a bit of wrestling. I have now to take it out again and seal it.
All things considered, could have been much worse. What do you think; paint or varnish?

Marine varnish and clear silicone sealant along the edges where it butts against the frame (or waterproof polyurethane glue). You want to stop water getting into the grain along the cut edges.
