In my limited knowledge, a Roarer is a horse that makes noise when undertaking strenuous work - is that right?!?!

So what about a horse that has always 'chuffed' when walking, generally when relaxed - but goes quiet when more alert or asked to do something more strenuous.

Add to this - the horse has now developed quite a strong wheeze instead of the chuff - still only when relaxed.

Horse competes at endurance and therefore has minimum of 2 vet checks at each ride, and has an excellent recovery rate and no other obvious symptoms.

vet is going to be consulted, just wondering if anyone has any suggestions!

last year my horse was a "roarer" (laryngeal hemiplegia) and he weezed during walk, trot and canter. He was lethargic and diagnosed as having grade 5 LH, the worst you can get. He had a tie back and hobday op at bristol vet school

so did mine,,, geoff lane????

Yep sounds like you might need to get the vet down and have a examination, a horse down at our yard was classed as a grade 5 roarer, vet said he was ok to hack out and do normal RC activeties providing you go easy with him, meaning once he starts puffing let him have a rest (bring him back to walk) and don't do ever over do it when trotting/cantering.

Geoff and Nigel woodford.

With Ros grade 5 you could hear him wheeze just leading him to the field so I thought it was unfair to expect him to be ridden. Now he is a different horse and much much happier! I wouldnt like to run of even jog if i couldnt breathe properly

The horse our yard only did it if you trotted him for more than 10 minutes etc, a full inspection was made by the vet and although he said he couldn't be worked like 'normal horse' he was ok to carry out hacking and jumping providing you let him rest when he started to puff, which meant only short trots or canters, she only used him as plod anyway and perhaps my friends case was not as bad as the one on this post.
I'm not condoning using a horse at all if the horse has difficulty breathing from just walking about.
