Sorry -this is a really silly question!

Can i, as a non member, compete in Prelim classes which are qualifiers? (I accept that I wont be eligible to qualify for Regionals) - I cant make sense of the rules or the guidance on the BD site - as it seems to suggest there should be a qualifying and non qualifying section?

Im dipping my toe into BD on my highland and want to ride the prelim and then a novice on a ticket but as both are technically qualifiers can I still do this?

You can become an associate member which is free!

Give the BD office a ring - they are really helpful when it comes to interpreting the rules.

When I was doing BD - last year admittedly - you could take part, but you and the horse needed to be associated members and you could only compete in the non qualifying classes. I know that rule changes have/are taking place though.

In the schedule at the moment qualifying classes will have SQ after them (summe qualifier) as a non member you can enter the prelim classes without these letters after them

Unless things have changed this is wrong.
As a non member you can compete prelim in both the qualifiers and the non qualifiers.
However you need to compete in the open section (or whatever the equivalent now is), and as such are not eligible to qualify.

im even more confused lol (but it doesnt take much!)
I guess I'll need to call them - I am an associate member already, not bothered about qualification really, just want to see how we compare in an affiliated comp

I may have got my self confused - apologies! I think I've got myself in a mess with the restricted/open qualifying/non qualifying able to qualify or not thing.

I now event. Far easier for my simple brain to understand ;)

Give them a quick call! I was called up for not having any membership for a PrelimQ class and had to get TeamQuest membership, but I was rather confused and just doing what they told me to, after the event!

BD are great if you give the office a call. You can do prelim without being a member - but you have to enter the open section of the competition (it doesn't matter whether it is a qualifying class or not). Any sheets gained will count towards area festivals (but you and the horse will need to be a full member to actually do area festivals) and you cannot collect prelim points towards regionals from the open section. :)
