Every year our show present 53 cups and trophies to each and every winner of every class and also to every champion. As we were having a problem getting them returned in time for the following year we introduced a £10 deposit which was returnable as soon as the cup was brought back. That didn't work.

The following year we asked every winner not to take the cup if they thought that they wouldn't be able to return it. First prize is £10 anyway so they could keep the money instead. Some of them come from the other side of the country which does make it difficult.

This year, with only 2 weeks to go, we still have 10 trophies which haven't been returned. Some of them are lovely big cups with names on them that go back to the fifties. These competitors all completed and signed their entry forms, together with tel numbers, when they first entered. They also signed for the cups when presented with them.

Now, after several letters and many un-answered phone calls we still are missing these ten. Many of these tel numbers don't exist.
Other than driving 40 or 50 miles and knocking on their door what are we supposed to do? It makes me soooooo angry!!!! IMO these people are criminals. I don't think they had any intention of returning them in the first place.

Does anyone know Julie Pearson from Oxfordshire? She won the P(UK) Brineton Riding Pony Class.

or Fiona Bricknell from Witney - won the Coloured Class.

I would list all of the names dun4 - could be they have moved, etc.

BTW, is there an online schedule for the show?

Also (sorry, off topic), have you got any dates for cubbing meets yet?

Hi, Weezy - go to:-

http://www.oldberkshunt.co.uk/events.html

to download schedule.

If you go to bed now you could go cubbing at 6.30am tomorrow (Mon) at the OBH Kennels!!!!!

By the way, I posted some pics of hounds on another website (Not horsey but more country-side) and got reminded by one of the mods not to call it cubbing but Autumn hunting. Both are non-PC these days so don't know what to call it!!!

We do have a lot of trouble with antis and I think this season may be bad because we think there have been one or two trying to infiltrate and join the Supporters' Club. The main pain in the a**e is a lady called Penny Little - she's trouble with a capitol T. So, in future, I won't put any meet dates on here if you don't mind!!!

Thank you!

Bleurgh, no, I won't be making it tomorrow! I must email and get the dates sent, I have not even got round to paying my sub yet - WILL SORT IT THIS WEEK! Sorry to hear about the troubles, I must say I have never had any dealings personally, but as a weekday follower I think I am more lucky. My PM box is always open for any OBH news

Nightmare, perhaps for next time get them to put more contact info such as work/2nd/3rd person to contact.

Personally I would put the deposit up higher.

The problem with asking for a deposit is that a lot of people view it as a sale. i.e. pay £10 and you get to keep the trophy.

What disgraceful behaviour! Another vote for naming and shaming all 10 of them. Do you have horse names as well (just to avoid inadvertantly naming and shaming an innocent third party)?

I used to run the Hook Norton show, and know all about retrieving trophies! Some will turn up on the day of the show, but often I had to do the long drives to go and collect them. Towards the end (it hasn't run for a couple of years as I was simply burned out with trying to organise it single handed) we went towards small give away medals and cups as it was so much easier to manage.

As for the Protect Our Wild Animals bunch....don't get me started........

Have you asked the equstrian magazines in your area if they would publish a list of prize winners who have not returned their trophies? People love to see their names in the results but may cough up pretty quick when they are on a 'wanted' list!!

catherineskinner - a good idea but the two main mags have just come out so won't be out again for a while. Still, there's no reason it can't be done even if the show has been and gone!!!!

drjames - yes, that could be the problem in some cases. We did consider putting the deposit up to £20 but decided against it. wish we had now - but I suppose £20 is nothing to some people who just can't be bothered.

The-watcher - I think small trophies and medals will have to be the way forward in future. Let them have their pic. taken with the trophy then take it off of them!!!

I'm now in the process of obtaining ALL the information about each individual including the name of the horse/pony from our Trophy Steward and publishing the list on all the horsey web-sites. NAME & SHAME - don't expect it will work but at least it might humiliate them and I will feel a bit better about it.

This post to weezy was in response to my comment about cubbing and hounds!!!!

I will be coming along to your show, its one of my faves of the year!!

Having organised shows and had same problem, we decided to buy keep trophies, its so much easier and we dont spend ages chasing for these rude people to return them. Its maybe not as traditional but they are under £5-10 to buy each and it works out less costly and at least competitors get something to keep.

It may be worth rewording your cup signing forms to amount to the fact if they are not returned by (date) it will be considered as theft and they will be reported to the police! - that worked for us for a few years.

Its so disappointing when someone wins a class and you cant present them with a cup.

I feel your pain!
