My horse first over reach injury hasn't healed properly yet so it has been banaged to stop flies getting to it (my horses are on 24 hour turnout) and i go to catch him and he has another one, this time just above the hoof. He has caught that quite badly too. He is not lame but has a chunk of flesh hanging off both injuries (not as bad as it sounds- i don't know how it will heal though). I can't really have him turned out with over reach boots on all the time... and i can't take his back shoes off because when i do get to ride him he does a lot of road work. the strange thing is that i have had him over a year and it is just last two weeks he has over reached... any suggestions?

why cant you turn him out in OR boots all the time? i dont understand? As long as you take them off daily to check thy arent rubbing i cant see a problem - surely thats better than him injuring himself all the time

he recks boots, rugs, fly masks etc etc. i am not sure how but it is speacility. the stables are reakky hot the moment and he doesn't like being all the times... and i am not keen on using turnout boots 24 hours, as they always seem to rub... fine for short turnout, but not all day and night.

Where I work about half of the horses permanently live in pull on rubber over-reach boots. I have to say when I first started there I thought they must rub but not one ever has.

If he's only just started doing it has anything changed with his shoeing? Maybe you could have a chat with your farrier to see if there's anything he could do to help.

i am going to phone the farrier today.. i have checked the back shoes but they seem fine, but i will see if the farrier has any 'special' shoes. when it heels i think i might get some pastern wraps, like race horses have, but until then it will just have it vetwraped, my over reach boots either sit just below the cut or ride up and sit directly on the cut... which can't help, but he is not lame and it is healing quite weirdly but well! thanks for all those suggestions, i might get some sports medicine boot (sp?) and over reach boots too. my poor horse will look ridicoulous! he already wears fetlock boots, and will now have his front legs complety bandaged, and he has to wear knee boots for hacks too!

Have you thought of asking the farrier for any solutions he may have, i have an excellent one that solves any problems i may have, if he cant help you it may be worth calling a farrier who specialises in remedial work to see if he can help, maybe his back toes are too long or something like that!
