In relation to the text re: white van and red landcruiser, I've had another - these men have been seen in Cramlington and tried to take a mare and foal from scaffold mill but were disturbed - 27 May - be careful as they have pit bull type dogs with them

Report any sightings to the police.

(Sisters YO got a call back from our local police saying original sightings of these men was DERBYSHIRE but yes, they are travelling...)

Is this real or is someone having a particularly poor effort at a laugh? These guys and their red landcruiser or whatever it is, seem to be all over the country...or does everyone already know this?!

I also wonder if this is a scam, i'm in Essex and we got this text last night. I know people like this travel but it seems a bit strange that they are moving between counties over night?!!

Well if you ring Cleveland police, as my sisters YO has, you'll be told it IS genuine and it originated in Derbyshire. Derbyshire to the North East isn't that far and we do get a lot of traffic heading over the pennines to Appleby from here - its not that far.

So no matter where the texts originated - the police here confirmed it and we've had the details of a confirmed sighting.

So if the police now have the reg. numbers of both of the vehicles why can't they trace the vehicles to the registered owners?

and question them?

I've just gotten this text 5 times today.

Now really quite worried as no word of a lie, me and my mate were stopped while riding then other day, and told to stand there while we had pictures taken, however we refused and left in a flash.

But I've seen people wandering around taking random pictures of horses.

I Don't knowwhat to think.

Elphie.

i was warned of this today (north east) when on a friends yard. the YO has advised against any overnight turnout as she has been warned of 2 local sightings.

i agree that is seems odd, but in my opinion its better to be safe than sorry!

I don't wish not to beleive this but they do travel very fast. Could they be in one area and it is chinese whispers regarding areas. As there have been so many sightings why has no-one rung the police to say exactly where they are? Police could then be on look out in that area for them moveing. They must be useing motorways to get about so quick - jet propelled! I find it odd, so many sightings but not stopped. I would follow at a reasonable distance whilst talking the the police.
Just to add another angle. Two Eastern Europeans were looking at Tickles a few weeks ago and set there Pit Bull type dog on him. When my husband confronted them they pulled a knife on him.
The police rang back nearly a week later for my husband to look at photo's!
Just remembered that with the dog mentioned although in no way am i saying it is connected and do not in any way wish to start rumours regards it.
I would just like to say if they are about so much and sighted report it imediately to the police-not helpful if you live near me. Watch where they go and give directions to the police. Sounds like they have an invisible cloak that magicly transports them. Carry a phone and get photos.

Oh come on - we're not talking about a country the size of the US. It takes me 5 hours to drive from Bedfordshire to Tyneside, and I only have a piddly little Ford Focus. If these guys are moving around at night, and not stopping in one place very long, they could easily be in all the places the reports suggest.

I think most of the CONFIRMED sightings seem to be in a fairly small area - Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, Cleveland (OK, thats a bit further away). It does illustrate clearly the importnance of putting an explicit location on all the Horsewatch texts that are sent. Just because these people are in Derbyshire at breakfast time, doesn't mean they couldn't be in Middlesex by teatime.

I'm pretty sure Appleby Fair is coming up soon as there are a lot of travellers setting up camp locally at the moment.
My husband said there are a lot near Masham and there are more than normal near Thirsk, also saw some thismorning who have set up camp in the middle of Boroughbridge!!
So quite possible that they are on the move up this way, and wanting stock to sell at the fair!!

Appleby is usually the first or second weekend in June... "Cleveland" and Durham/Darlington etc, are on or close to the route (A66) that a lot of travellers use.

The reason the number plates are no use for tracing the vehicles are that they trave back to crushed vehicles (someone else confirmed this with the police) so they are using false plates.

People up here are certainly reporting sightings to the police hence the Cramlington one.

Sounds to me like these are places along the general route to Appleby from different directions, and the edges are being blurred by the texts and emails going to everyone - which is no bad thing in general but is confusing the actual sightings.

If they want our horses, TB won't box and is not good to catch, Asti is too fat to waddle up a ramp, and if they took Ivy, they'd sharpish bring her back!!!!

However, there is one thing to be said for all this hoo-ha - IF YOU ARE THAT WORRIED ABOUT YOUR HORSES - FREEZEMARK THEM!!!!!

(Or freezemark and identichip if like me you aren't risking it!!!!)

I've had this text 5 times today as well, apparently these well travelled guys have been in Fife, Lothian, Peeblesshire, Biggar and Kelso! That is some van to do that kind of super travelling!
I'm all for warnings but this one does appear to have got well out of hand, I remember about 15 years ago being told there was someone in out area mutilating mares and I ended up practically sleeping in my twos stables for about a month despite nothing ever happening anywhere near! I'll remain vigilant but I'm not going to get flustered about it!

Bugger thats getting a bit close for comfort.....

Some travellers that are always camped in the same place on my way to work had their coloured mare stolen the back end of last year, she was tethered next to their caravans and must have been taken in the night!! They left their big white mare though.

They've got a lovelly coloured stallion now but they seem to only have them tethered when they are around, if they aren't the horses are usually out of sight!!

I'm starting to think everyone is seeing things now though, its getting out of hand... they really can't be in all these places at once.

Even the police are apparently (our local ones) saying they think its Derbyshire that the actual sightings were and now everyone is playing bandwagons...

But again if it makes people more vigilant and gets people freezemarking - surely its a good thing?

Is the white van and red Landcruiser 100% certainty? Because that is what was seen here in Devon before a Chestnut horse got stolen!!!!!!!
