My mare had a nose bleed tonight just after she had eaten her tea, she seemed ok when i got her in i groomed her and rugged her up and put her in for her tea, she was fine when i left but when i got home half an hour later i had a call to say her nose was bleeding, i went back it was a small trickle from both nostrils, there was a small blood clot on the stable floor, her temp is normal, and she seems fine in herself?? The only other thing is she has when she comes in is swollen from her jaw line up to her ears both sides, the vet has checked this and said not to worry she think its when there is not alot of grass she goes off searching bushes etc vet just said allergic reaction?? any one got any ideas do you think its related??

Kizzy used to have them always one nostril never realy much but one night she has a very bad one there was a red river running through the yard.Vet came and said he had only seen one as bad before which didnt make it he gave her an injection but wasnt hopeful

After about 10 mins it had stopped she then had small ones every now and then when she became stressed. She had a lump behind her eye which was believed to be cancer so couldnt investigate the reason why they happend but it was believed to be linked to that.
Most cases are nothing to worry about but i would get it investigated by your vet

Daughters TB used to do this ,have to admit it frightened us to death the first time ,but had it checked by the vet ,who couldn't find anything to worry about. So didnt happen all time just everynow and again, usually after exercise ,and stopped as fast as it started.
I did however go on line and put in nosebleed equine and lots of useful stuff came up to explain it.
Daughters horse lived to nearly 25 and had a good life ,so wouldn't worry too much.

Happens alot in racehorses.. once a horse has had it's first nose bleed, it's generally thought of as a 'bleeder', some can continue to race like this, others can't.. keep stable well ventalated (sp?) and don't do dusty things while the horse is in the stable (ie shake up bedding)... as it's not a racehorse, i wouldn't worry about it at all.. bleeding is only really a problem in a horse that needs to gallop hard, ie racehorses and eventers.

Oh that was another thing I should have put on my reply in the vet section - my mare had tiny bleeds (sometimes randomly, sometimes after exercise, often after banging her head) first from one nostril then from the other after about six months of it coming from the first. Never both at the same time though. Vet was thoroughly confused, endoscoped both sides plus guttural pouches, found nothing. She then advised me to keep my horse as if she were a case of COPD - well ventilated stable, soaked hay, fed from the floor at all times. It worked wonders, she bled far less frequently then. She's now retired through another unrelated injury and being outdoors 24.7 I either don't notice when she bleeds because it is wiped off on the grass, or she doesn't at all. It never bothered her either way, but it's nicer for her not to be bleeding really, hence the effort on my part!
