abby came in with a nose bleed this evening, seemed herself. blood was very red and it didn't look like it had been bleedin long. it was dripping so i phoned the vet, and she said to leave her in and check on her again this evening to make sure it hadn't got any worse. by he time i had made the phone call and got back round to her stable it looked as if it had stopped.

does anyone have any experience with nosebleeds??

Yes Ellie suffers with them, started about 3 years ago, she has infrequent ones now. Hers are always when she is in the stable; the vet at first wondered whether she had an environmental allergy, but we have pretty much ruled this out now. There is a potentially fatal condition which can be heralded by a nosebleed (I forget the name - all I know is that it is something to do with some kind of buildup - the vet says it ends with the 'stable turning red'

); however the vet scoped and blood tested Ellie and found that this was not the case.

Is your mare bleeding from both nostrils, or just one? Ellie was always just the left nostril. The blood also tends to be quite vividly red, and there isnt much of it in her case.

one of my horse has had these a few times. My vet said this ... one nostril nothing to much to worry about as a one off or rare occurance. Two nostrils would be something more to be concerned about and he would scope. forutnatly mines only ever been one and quite rare and no pattern to it. sure it will be ok. ring vet again if in any doubt.

i'm just concerned cause i've never had a horse hav a nose bleed and i feel like i should camp on the yard tonight to make sure she's ok . i do trust the vets judgement and i gave her all the details it's just worrying

do u think i should camp up there?? i'd be willing too. mum just shouted at me sayin i'd freeze but i'd freeze for my horse any day

I would say you dont need to camp there....I'm sure she will be fine, if it is just a little bit of blood and just one nostril, I'd have thought you have nothing to worry about. She may even have been mucking around in the field, and perhaps burst a blood vessel? Dont panic; if your vet is unconcerned, it will be ok!

are u sure, i'm goin through all the what if's an gettin myself in a right state even tho it didn't look that bad at all

I know, I know....I did all the same things with my girl, but she was fine. If your mare is showing no other signs of illness - coat shiny, eyes bright, eating, drinking and passing - then I'm sure everything will be fine! Get the vet to come out tomorrow if you are still worried - I think Ellie's bleed recurred twice in three days, and then she didnt have another one for months.

There is a condition that leads to nosebleeds which can be cured/controlled with extra vitamins - K????? Not sure, but I had a friend with a hunter that needed this. It worked, because if it was forgotten his nose bled again, although not quite sure where from, if you see what I mean.

No problem - although I know you probably wont sleep tonight - I know I didnt! How far away is your yard? Can you go and call in to see her before bed time, just to put your mind at rest?

Nosebleed from one nostril very rarely serious, especially if it stopped that quickly.

No need to camp in stables

Oops! My fault for using complicated language!

9.00pm check will set your mind at rest

If your horse has another nosebleed you may want to have it endoscoped (a little tube with a camera that the vet inserts down the nostril to check the respirtory system) but I would follow vets advice.

There are lots of possible reasons so dont worry yet. One off nosebleeds can happen and can be completely harmless which is why your vet isnt worried, particularly as it is from one nostril as this indicates it is not bleeding from the lungs ( I think). (Two nostril bleeds indicate this) Repeated nosebleeds require investigation. If your horse has bled from one nostril and stopped quickly then just keep an eye on it. If your horse has another then speak to your vet. If your horse has several than your vet will want to investigate anyway.

Im keeping a v close eye on her atm and if it happens again Ill have another vets bill...

Why do we have horses..

its mainly down to a burst blood vessel from sneezing like we can get my shire gets them they will clear up about half hour with me cleaning it with tissue
there should be no cause for concern in less you cant stop bleeding then i would get vet out to have a look
dont worry

dont worry im sure she is fine, my mare also called abbey, was having a few nose bleeds last year, from the one nostrel, she is very sensitive to files etc so maybe if your mare is the same its all the blowing they do! I had her scoped to make sure as she was getting them regularly, and im a real worrier, but there was nothing wrong, and as everyone else has said from the one nostrel it is unusual for it to be serious, more like abbey who is just very sensitive to her environment, she had one the other day after x-country aswell, but dont panic to much, if its only i small amount you dont need to wory, I no it looks horible as it is so red but they dont bat an eyelid!

but if you are still worring I would have the vet do a blood clotting test and to make sure that is ok, and then a scope if you feel you want to no it is nothing serious,

really dont worry, she will be fine!! xx
