when i got my daughter's pony in yesterday evening i noticed he had a slight nosebleed (one nostril). YM said this was normal in some horses in the hot weather.

Anyone else had this? Should I be worried?

My daughter took him for a short hack, just walking and a short trot (as it was so hot) and it did not start up again.

NOsebleeds can be due to many factors ,I have just had Penfold scoped because he had a bleed after an event a couple of weeks back , they gave him the all clear . My worry was gutteral pouch mycosis which can be fatal, so I had to have him checked. It is rare but if your pony has more then get him checked but he may have just banged his nose and caused a minor bleed.
I am sure he will be ok

Small trickles that happen very occasionally I don't tend to worry about. Gushing blood that drips everywhere without an obvious cause concerns me, especially if it happens more than once.

Have known two severe bleeders - one had a mass growing in his sinues, he had a whole cut in his face, through the bone to remove it, then had the whole packed and flushed daily. He bled quite impressively, the yard would be covered in blood and washed down, some of the bleeds went on for over an hour. They stopped after the mass was removed.

Other was a mare who only seemed to bleed over night, but there were drips everywhere. Took her to be scoped, and have her gutteral pouches checked. All was clear and didn't even trigger a bleed until the scope was removed for the last time when she had the last bleed shes had!

a small nose bleed is nothing to worry about as long as its not gushing and it stops if it constently does it i would get vet but at the moment if it a slight nosebleed and not gussing i wouldnt worry

I agree with all the above, but also I thought I'd add that bleeding slightly from one nostril is not much to worry about, but bleeding from both nostrils at the same time suggests a problem with the lower airways (lungs etc) and should be discussed with your vet.
If in doubt, call the vet

Thanks everyone. It was just a small trickle from one nostril - not even enough to drip.

I'll keep an eye on him and if it happens again will prob ring vet for some advice.

Thanks

We have a horse on the yard that bleeds regularly. Vet says that if the blood is bright red, then it's from a burst/damaged capillary in the nose. If it's dark and/or from both nostrils, then it comes from the lungs. Probably nothing to be worried about in your case, but wise to keep an eye on it.

They seem to have been popular this weekend. We had one of he liveries with a nose bleed too. They paid as much attention as usual, poor little mite.
