Does anyone know much about nose bleeds in horses? My horse had a couple, one day after the other a few months ago (this tied in with him getting laminitis), he has been fine since - on the road to recovery and had another one last night?? He was fine in himself, eating, drinking, going to the toilet, as excited as ever to have his dinner, bright with nice pink gums - so nothing out of the ordinary. Any ideas on why he is getting these? To add, the bleeds are always out of the same nostril??

Have you spoken with your vet about these bleeds ? I had a similar problem with my 18.3 id x tb at the beginning of the year but unfortunately it didnt turn out very good. Keep me posted on what your vet says. Good luck !!

Ahhh, that doesn't sound good.... if you don't mind me asking what was the outcome? I did speak with my vet when they first happened and she said not to worry unless they continue. There is only a little bit of blood coming out and they stop by themselves.

It started one morning when I went to do the breakfast that I noticed he had a bleed from one nostril, only slight but during the course of the morning it hadnt stopped (continual trickle) my vet came out to see him and booked him into the surgery for the next morning for an endoscopy....found nothing but still bleeding, gave me sedative to lower blood pressure, took some blood samples and we took him home. Cut a very long story short. Still bleeding spasmodically during the week so off to Leahurst following week. Endoscopy and MRI scan done again found nothing sent me home to see if bleed would stop....week later still slight bleed, same nostril, but he went off his feed and showed signs of colic....off again to Leahurst, stayed for tests (kidney biopsey - livery biopsey) nothing...by end of 3rd week he had to be put on a drip and the decision to do a laparotomy was made...found a tumour 50cm dia. in his large intest. and secondaries so they didnt wake the boy up. The pm said he was of good weight and excellent condition and couldnt believe how poorly he actually had been. Keep your chin up, this was a VERY rare case. Not all bleeds have the same results.

AN UPDATE
Have called the vet this morning and she wants to come out and see my horse and scope him to make sure there is nothing to worry about - I'm scared!

You have done the right thing calling your vet out. As I said in my reply, not all bleeds have the same results. There are many, many different reasons for them. Your vet should be able to rule out anything untoward if she does a scope, im sending you lots of hugs and keep your chin up. Let me know how you get on.

Hi CPW,
I have spoken to Penky about this before and once again, Penky I am realy sorry to hear about your horse. However my story is a bit different.

After Aveys 3rd nose bleed in 6 weeks I got the vet out who scoped her and blood tested her. All clear which was fab news. Turns out that she had an infection in her sinuses, 10 days of antibiotics later and 4 weeks down the line she has not had another (touch wood). Vet said that if she has another bleed then we will xray as it may be a haematoma in simuses or fungal infection which although not great are not completely awful and fully recoverable (if that is a word!). So dont panic, wait and see what the scoping brings up- it may be all ok!
