Hi,

My pony used to suffer with nose bleeds when I first bought her. They used to be quite bad but never bothered her and I was told not to worry (even though I could be riding her and blood would be dripping from her nose) Anyway, its been about 4 years since this last happened but tonight when I got her in she had a bloody nose. I cleaned it up and as she seemed perky enough so I put her in her stable for the night. I checked her before I left and the nose had some gunk there but no blood. I am going to go back down tonight just to check on her.

Has anyone had any experience of this? Should I be worried? What could be causing it?

She head shakes badly in the summer and I control this with a supplement. However today is miserable and pouring with rain so I am at a loose end as to what may have caused it?

Any ideas anyone?? Thank you

Rosie was like that random nasal problems started in June 2009, then again in September finally went into the vets in October so they could scope her to see what was going on up there. Then they x-rayed her and found a small cycst in her sinus. She then had a very minor operation and touch wood everything has been better since.

Aw, glad Rosie is better. Fingers crossed Jamin doesnt need an op! She has really aged in the last year and seems to have everything wrong with her bless her. She used to be such a toughy.

Thanks Emma :)

Have just read that horses bleed from the nose usually after work. Most common in race horses. This kind of makes sense because she is very stressy and when I first got her she was in a field with 6 others and when they started to come in for the night jamin used to gallop around the field getting stressed (I was always down later due to work). I managed to change fields about 4 years ago where she was able to go out in a paddock with an old pony who lived out. This meant Jamin was never stressed when she came in because she was never left alone in the field. The old pony she shares the field with has lost a lot of weight this year and so is being brought in. I cant always get down before she comes in which has meant that of late, Jamin has been galloping up and down the paddock again. Could this perhaps be the cause of the bleeds I wonder??

If she hasnt had the bleeds for approx 4 years then this kind of makes sense.

I guess I should def speak to my vet.

She tends to head shake in the summer...linked?

I was wondering if a respiratory supp may help? Hopefully her OAP field buddy will be back living out soon once the better weather arrives.

the amount of blood was neglible out of my horses nose compared to what was in his lungs, hes always been fit and healthy and is now nearly 18. these patches are brill. as i said, he had 2 courses of them and is fine now. they have a web site up in north wales, i hasten to add they are not cheap but certainly worth it. i have known this about racehorses having bleeds which makes sense and our horse is an 3/4 arab who can be stressy too!! good luck if you decide to buy them-
