my oldie (29) came in tonight with another nose bleed, it wasn't bad just a trickle, he cam in a couple of weeks ago with one too but it was a worse, there was quite a bit of blood, i rang the vet and he wasn't that concerned just said keep an eye on him and if it bled and didn't stop then best get him checked.
He looks really well ans is happy in himself, but i am a bit concerned, would you be ?
and has anyone experienced this before ?
would appreciate so feed back
Thanks x

sorry can't help but would be interested to see the responses. My daughters horse who is 22 ish has started having nose bleeds too. They are never massive but just a trickle or two. I had the same response from the vet :(

At your horses age I would maybe get them scoped just to see whats going on but no, I wouldn't necessarily be overly worried. If the blood is quite dark then a blood vessel has burst in the nasal passage - nothing really to worry about, the horse has probably exerted himself and popped it - easy to do. If the blood is bright red then it comes from the lungs. Again usually due to over excertion but this time strain on the lungs to pop a blood vessel. These are the most common causes of nose bleeds in horses.

Was he hooning round the field, bumped his nose/head or anything before you got him in? Is it from the same nostril?

If they continue though, regardless of if the bleeding is slight or a steady flow that won't stop, ask the vet to take some swabs/bloods and run them.
It's unlikely, but some horses get a fungal infection which affects the guttural pouch in the horse's head/respiratory system. Nosebleeds are one symptom of this. They have a pouch on each side of the head, and are actually quite easily open to infection because they are part of the breathing and eating process, meaning particles can become trapped in the mucus in them and then develop into disease/infection.

I think due to the fact its happened a couple of times now I would deffo get it investigated further.

My old mare started getting them when she was about 20 I had her scoped as she had quite a few, they found nothing and she never had another one after that, some horses just burst the blood vessels in there nose sometimes or it can be something horrible, best to check it out if it keeps hapening I will say though when they scoped her it really did bleed alot which was not nice.

Our 29yo tb will occasionally get these. Not a lot if blood but I think it's purely vessels in his nasal passage - that or he's had his head in the hawthorne! I normally just clean it up and see if still bleeding but generally, as quickly as it had started it stops. He is a pretty thin-skinned tb and he does like to run about do I just think it's one of those things. Not sure if it occurs more in fitter or what used to be fitter type horses maybe as well?

My 17yo Welsh D used to have little nosebleeds at this time of year. I spoke to the vet and they weren't bothered, the horse wasn't bothered, and neither was I. I put it down to a combination of high humidity, midges up the nose and an slight allergy to OSR as it only happened when it was very muggy and the OSR was in flower.
Get them checked by all means, but really unless the horse is in distress it's nothing to worry about
