My horse evented yesterday and went really well but it was hot, humid and tough. He had quite a wait in the box for prize giving and them travelled 2 hours home. When we unloaded him there was alittle blood in one nostril, so he had had a nose bleed but not any on floor ,so only slight.
I usually travel with him as he weaves badly in the box sometimes but I had to travel in the front as had baby in car seat with us and daughter driving on provisional licence. So I don't know if he banged himself or it is because of the strain. He did have one once last year the same. He is a headshaker and blows his nose alot and is on zephyr pollenex for this which has helped as he doesn't rub so much on you when he returns from work.He also wears a nosenet.
Anyone any experience of this?

One of our horses had a nose bleed after work on a hot day during our summer. It only lasted for a few hours and was in one nostril. When she had her bleed I researched the topic and came up with the following -

From Douglass B. Berry, II, DVM, DACVS
Large Animal Surgeon
Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine

Anythime your horse has a nose bleed that persists for longer than a few hours and is not immediately associated with exercise, but more of a "just started" situation...you should schedule a standing endoscopic examination with your veterinarian. The procedure is minimally irritating and allows visual inspection of the important structures and areas of the horses head and respiratory tract. The cost is variable depending on the sedation and examination requirements.

What needs to be determined is if the bleeding is coming from the sinus, guttural pouch or lungs. If bleeding is originating from the guttural pouch, this is an immediately life threatening problem which requires correction at a surgical facilty such as mine. If the bleeding is from the sinus, radiographs of the head are indicated to rule-out a tumor. These are the most common problems I see in pleasure and older animals.

I hope this helps.

I wouldn't worry too much about the little bleed unless he is showing other respiratory signs or it happens again. Probably just a bit of exercise induced pulmonary haemorrhage as a result of working hard or a knock in the trailer.

Do you travel with your horse in a trailer or a lorry?

In a lorry and he loves to go in, will stand there happily but when we are moving he can weave badly. My daughter is a really good careful smooth driver but he hates traffic anyway when riden and doesn't like built up areas and gets really bad when he knows he is near home
